Show 1 1 GOOD h HIGHWAYS Illinois Highways Will Have Roadside Planting Native trees and shrubs are to be planted along the entire length of the Fox River trail In Kane County, I1L, making the road through the beautiful Fox River valley of even greater interest in-terest to the tourist. 1 With $17,000 already available the Iwork of preparing the ground was (carrled on during the summer, and the actual planting was done this fall. O. C. Slmonds of Chicago, leading exponent ex-ponent of the naturalistic style of planting, has charge of the work. I Under the direction of Superintendent Superin-tendent of Schools Osher Schlalfer of Dundee, who Is a leader In Kane county coun-ty educational circles, this plan for beautifying this famous concrete highway high-way has been financed, and memberships member-ships in the Children's Highway association asso-ciation are being sold to school children chil-dren In each town along the trail, at 50 cents each, as a fund to take care of the trees, shrubs and flowers after they have been planted. Too frequently It is the case that enthusiasm flares up for roadside planting, a few trees are stuck In the ground with blare of trumpets and high-sounding word's of dedication, and then the trees are left to die. It Is especially gratifying to the people of the Fox River valley, and Kane county In particular, that provision Is being made to preserve this planting once made. Although some systematic planting of roadsides has been undertaken by states and counties, It is believed this Is the first time a complete planting has been prepared for a cross-county highway 35 miles in length, and a definite scheme worked out for financing financ-ing and maintaining the planting. |
