Show 1'L'RCHASE OK SEALS URGED Support of the Utah Public Health Association's efforts to eradicate tuberculosis tu-berculosis in this state is urged Dy Governor Charles R. Mabey through a proclamation issued yeterday. The rovernor declares that the sale of Christmas seals has done much to wipe out the white plague and to interest in-terest people in better health. The proclamation sets aside December De-cember 14th as Tuberculosis Sunday Sun-day and asks that churches stress the need! of proper knowledge as1 a means of preventing the spread of the disease. The text of the proclamation follows: fol-lows: The people of Utah have entered which will bring beflore them the importance of health conservation, jwith particular reference to the sub-1 sub-1 ject of tuberculosis prevention. ' The appearance of the Christmas j seals for the seventeenth season, is ;a reminder of the wonderful pro gress which has been made in our state and in the nation in decreasing decreas-ing the ravages of tuberculosis and also of the problem which still confronts con-fronts us. "if there is any one thing more than another that has brought about this marked decline it is the campaign cam-paign of education that is carried on from year to year to teach people that the disease is curable and preventable. pre-ventable. Formerly it was believed that consumption was incurable and little effort was put forth to prevent it. "The National Tuberculosis association, asso-ciation, some seventeen years ago, put out a Christmas seal to be sold at a penny apiece to interest the public in a great nation-wide effort to stamp out tuberculosis. This little lit-tle penny Christmas seal stands today to-day as the champion of health .and the enemy of the "great white plague." It has been the meansi of interesting more people in the cause of tuberculosis prevention and good health than any other one thing. "Financial returns from the annual an-nual seal sale have not been large, but the results have been tremendous tremend-ous and far-reaching, exceeding the fondest hopes of those who eonveiv-ed eonveiv-ed this splendid means of financing the warfare against tuberculosis. "The Utah Public Health association associa-tion has done a good work in this direction, and its worthy effort for a state tuberculosis sanitorium for the care and treatment of th infected infect-ed is to be commended. There is neeu tut more uurseis to visit tne homes and, instruct those suffering with this disease and those with whom the patient comes in contact. Preventive work among children by teaching them proper health habits and developing their bodies as well as their minds should be encouraged in every county of the state. "The message of the 1924 Christmas Christ-mas Seal is to carry on the fight for health. Every seal bought and every seal used on Christmas mail helps. Every penny that is given in exchange ex-change for a Christmas seal will be put t0 work in carrying on the crusade cru-sade against the white plague and promoting good helath. In a firm belief that this undertaking under-taking is worthy of the support of the people of Utah, Now, therefore, I Charles R. Mabey, Ma-bey, governor of the State of Utah, do hereby designate Sunday, December Decem-ber 14th. as Tuberculosis Sunday In the State of Utah, and I call upon the churches to observe this day in their pulpits, and urge the people of this great state upon this occasion to give serious thought to the terrl-! terrl-! hie destruction of life wrought yearly year-ly by tuberculosis, and1 to stress the fact that remedies are to be found in education. "I further express the hope tha( these thoughts will prompt the people peo-ple to give their unstinted support to the Utah Public Health association associa-tion in its worthy efforts to eradicate eradi-cate tuberculosis and to promote the public health. "In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to he affixed the great seal of the state of Utah. "Done at the capitol. Salt Lake City, this fifth day of December, A. D. 1924.
