Show HEAVY LOAD While in California last week, we1 naw a truck loaded with 196 bales )f hay. Tho truck and load -was being be-ing weighed and registered a little over 4 4001) pounds or 22 tons. Such loads as this are doing an Immense injury to the beautiful roads in that county. The trucking 'tisiness and the auto stages have been developedl to such an extent 'hat hey have become strong competition com-petition of the railroad and street ars, and as the gasoMne vehicles do not have any right of way to purchase or any road bed to construct and maintain, and only have a nominal license and tax to pay they are able 'o make the same rate as the steam or electric lines, which 'must own and maintain their own road bed, besides be-sides paying enormous taxes to keep tp the highways for their competition competi-tion to use. The problem of highway maintenance mainte-nance is becoming the one big tax problem of Southern California. The tax payer is grumbling about 'he rapid destruction of their road system by such heavy traffic and many methods of a more equal dla-Iribution dla-Iribution of the burden are being discussed. |
