Agents Conduct Raid Against Undesirables Which Resulted Re-sulted in Capture of Large Number Who May be Deported. Washington. The greatest roundup round-up of radicals in the nation's history was conducted Janiwry 2 by the government, gov-ernment, acting through department of justice agents in thirty-three cities, stretching from coast to const. Not alone was the round-up the largest yet conducted by the government govern-ment in its effort to rid the country of radicalism, hut. in the view of officials', offi-cials', it was the most thoroughly carried car-ried out. The biggest "bag" of t lie radicals was made in New York, where at mid night more than 300 had been arrested and sent to Ellis Island. From a dozen New England cities 300 or more of the communists were gathered, and in Detroit the raiders found plentiful supply, taking about 300 into custody. Chicago and Philadelphia supplied more than 120 and Buffalo about 100. A larger number than in any previous previ-ous raid was reported from practically all of the cities. Reports showed that 3893 radicals had been arrested. Department of justice agents were directed to catch the radicals "with the goods on," and that these directions direc-tions were carried out was evidenced in reports, particularly from New Y'ork, where the office of communist newspapers were raided, and from New England, where considerable literature litera-ture prepared for dissemination by the two parties, was seized. The primary objects of the raids, Assistant Attorney General Garvan announced, an-nounced, was the obtaining of evidence upon which the department of labor might proceed with the deportation of undesirables. Officials here declared the nationwide nation-wide round-up was the most complet-ly complet-ly planned and the machinery was the best oiled for this of any raids launched against the radical element in tills country. It was arranged some ten days previous that the raid should take place Friday, and confidential communications were sent to department depart-ment of justice representatives and United States attorneys in the thirty-three thirty-three cities. |
