Show LETTER FROM BROWN BUSH j i Dear Brother Aaron ' A late answer to your very wel- j come letter today, to say 1 am well and O. K. y,nd still on the right side! of a Baldwin. I have been working; :;o hard and steady, that I have had very little time for anything only! rest a few hours when 1 finally got j back to camp and start out again.'. You know the 16 hour law never! i bothers in this country, so we don't I notice the long hours much any more We have been handling a lot of troops of late headed for home, so our time will probably come some time in the future. They are granting grant-ing leaves to the soldiers at the present pres-ent time, and if possible, I am going to try and get a pass to England. I have seen France from Verdun to (be sea, and I don't care very much about seeing a great deal more of it. I have been in Pnric n.ir, have seen many of' the historical places there, so if possible, I wanf to see London before I come back to the United States I have gotten so that I don't crave many of the luxuries of life any more, so when I get back, 1 think I will be content with most anything. I have almost forgotten how it goes to sleep on a spring mattress, and several times in this country, I have felt the pangs of hunger when I had' a purse full of money on me. More than once I have slept on the groimd with the sky for a roof, and have; kgone into places where I had to waiti for someone to get up before I could' get a bed. The Red Cross eating stations have sure been a life-saver, to the railroad men in this country.' We have had our hardships but ' , ; j i we have had' a great experience, w hich we will always remember for all time. How would you like to be standing out with a thousand or Hot) tons behind be-hind you. and probably 1 car of air or maybe none (it all. The headlights head-lights on the engines are oil, and not very large, and give very poor light ahead of the engine. 1 have run over strange tracks at night sometimes with a French pilot, sometimes none at all, and where we get a show over good track, we run about as fast as in the states with a freight train. When we get nine of ten cars of .air behind us we feel like we are I at home. I think I will hike home for at least two months of rest after I T come back to America. I was sure sorry .to hear of the flu I taking such a heavy toll, and especially espec-ially of John Amberson passing jaway, as he was a worthy man. I ( will sure be glad when the Statue of Liberty looms up in sight, and so will all the boys. ; Don't forget to write, as I expect you have more leisure time than I, jand I am always glad indeed to hear 'from you. With best wishes to yourself and family, your friend and brother, Sergt. Brown Bush. |
