Show New Stewardess Officiates at . Birth of Baby on Challenger Another convincing demonstration demon-stration of the outstanding service serv-ice of registered nurse-stewardesses on Union Pacific trains was brought to light this week when it was learned that a new, stewardess, stew-ardess, Miss Laura Mary Shepherd, Shep-herd, had officiated at the birth of a child to Mrs. Nellie Leuthje in the woman's rest room of a Challenger coach. Although Miss Shepherd had been in the employ of the railroad rail-road only three weeks, her rigid training, particularly in the care of women and children as required re-quired of all Union Pacific nurse-stewardesses nurse-stewardesses fitted her for the emergency and she gave expert medical assistance to both mother moth-er and child for fifteen minutes before arrival of a physician. The baby, a six-pound boy, was born at 3:40 A.M. as the Challenger Challen-ger was speeding between Warn-sutter Warn-sutter and Riner. Wyo., just west of Rawlins. Mrs. Leuthje was enroute from Rupert, Idaho to her former home in Independence, Kan., and was accompanied by her four other children, the oldest of which was six. When Miss Shepherd was awakened by the conductor and advised of the woman's illness, she immediately obtained a supply sup-ply of towels and bandages and, donning rubber gloves, gave emergency treatment until a physician and an ambulance arrived ar-rived and the woman was transferred trans-ferred to a Rawlins hospital. Laura. M. Shepherd Miss Shepherd was highly commended com-mended by the Rawlins doctor, by Union Pacific officials and by the mother, who is doing nicely. w Miss Shepherd, the daughter of Harvey F. Shepherd of Calex-ico, Calex-ico, Cal., and a native of San Diego, joined the ranks of Union Pacific nurse-stewardesses three weeks ago and was immediately assigned to duty on a Challenger train. Miss Shepherd is a registered regis-tered nurse a requisite required of air Union Pacific stewardesses and holds certificates both in California and New York. |
