Airport Program ; Okehed By House; The house gave speedy approval Monday to a $267,733,728 appro- i priatlion bill carrying funds for training about 700,000 defense 1 workers and for initiating a pro-; gram designed to give this coun-, try 4000 civil and military air-j ports. The measure now goes to! the senate. ! It makes $30,000,000 in cash and $50,000,000 in contract authorizations authoriza-tions available for the $500,000,-it, $500,000,-it, the house appropriations com-, com-, 000 airport program. In indorsing ' mittee said the existing1 system of landing fields was "woefully inadequate" to meetj the needs of the nation's expanding military air forces. ' Robert H. Hinckley, assistant secretary of commerce, formerly , of Ogden, told the committee the i government's goal is 400 airports,1 exclusive of auxiliary landing I fields, whereas there are only 1800 j now in existence. I "The value of numerous airports, air-ports, strategically located and widely scattered, is brought home j forcibly by the air battles of Europe", Eu-rope", the committee said. ! To create a reservoir of me-' me-' chanics and other employes for defense industries, the committee recommended an appropriation of $60,5006,000 for the office of edu-i edu-i cation, which will conduct the training program in vocational : and other schools throughout the country. It recommended an ad-iditional ad-iditional $32,500,000 to enable the i national youth administrtation to ; bring about 125,000 more youths ' into its program. They would be j given part-time defense training, i In conjunction with the proposed pro-posed airport expansion program, i the committee recbmmiended expenditure ex-penditure of $2,901,000 for addi-I addi-I tional air navigation facilities and I $500,000 for the weather bureau to expand its weather reporting j service. j |
