Show i Ruminatin Roundabout In which Ruminator proposes to dream a lot, think as 'little as necessary, scatter a few bouquets bou-quets while their objectives are still above the sod to enjoy them, and fire a hot-shot now and then while said Kumina; or can enjoy seeing the sparks fly. In contrast with last year's high school graduating class, this year's class chose to get their graduation announcements through The News office. As a result, the students got nice announcements a little cheaper than we first quoted and there was none of the delays or spelling mistakes which made the experiment of last year's class such a distressing incident. Also, through The News advancing the cost of the announcements as a lot, individual students have been able to get their announcements as they were able to raise the money, mon-ey, which means something to boys and girls at graduating time. This made it unnecessary to hold up delivery de-livery until all the cash was in. The News lost a couple of subscribers sub-scribers Monday and, with it well recognized that a newspaper may be pretty well judged by the subscribers sub-scribers it loses from time to time (and lose them they all do) we might be disposed to pass the matter mat-ter up but for the duty we feel the puper owes to the taxpayers of the community, who no doubt will be interested in certain facts leading-tip leading-tip to this childish action on the part of these two subscribers. Accordingly, Ac-cordingly, a little back history will b quite in order: Some 17 months ago, with the the partial change in administration administra-tion of town government, Theodore Kronholm was dismissed as combination com-bination marshal and water superintendent, super-intendent, a new man being named for each position, with the water man given a badge as deputy marshal. mar-shal. At once the two men were so much in evidence on the streets that even to the casual observer, they almost seemed to get in each other's way. And just about that time there began a series of forcible forci-ble entries of business estabish-ments estabish-ments (which is nothing short of burglary) which assumed apalling proportions. It finally became necessary for business men of the town to meet with the town board to beg proper nighttime protection. Out of the meeting came some kind of a hazy arrangement by which the marshal should do night duty while the watermaster-deputy marshal mar-shal could keep an eye on the peace and dignity within the town during : the daytime. There has been little or no need of strict daytime police surveillance in Milford for many years but still the two officers persisted in ganging up during the daytime, especially during the afternoon, af-ternoon, while the wee sma' hours of the night continued to be "open hours" for continuation of the burglaries. At least that is the : way it has panned out, for the number of burgaries has mounted to some 30-odd- with not a single apprehension by the town officers! These two men, as citizens, are of the highest type. To the best of our knowledge they are conscientious, conscien-tious, honest, hardworking men . But as protection for Milford taxpayers against burglars it has been to laugh! Last week The News took real , pleasure in praising Mr. Kronholm ( for his summary handling of the ( stealing of a slot machine from one " of the local pool halls, apprehend1- ( ing the guilty parties, finding the money taken from the machine, , and securing confessions all with- , in about four hours after the steal-ing, steal-ing, and acting on his authority as ( deputy sheriff. ( t And if this didn't merit j praise, especially after what ) the business men of Milford ; have been putting up with, , we'd like to know what does! , But this praise must not have ' set so well with the other two of- ficers for it was they who had , their names stricken from the subscription sub-scription list of The News. We cannot be honest and say that we . wer surprised by their action, however, for we had them sized up about that way! But if they, or any others, , think that this or similar ac- j tion is going to deter us from upholding the rights of the j taxpayers to get value receiv- j ed from those who are suppos- j ed to serve them, they are . quite mistaken! I i i! These two officers forget that-we that-we accorded them due praise in a j ( run-in they had with C C C boys ( shortly after they took office! I s That they have not come in for j j (Continusd on laat page) 'j Ruminatin ! y Continued from first pae.e) further commendation is hardly our fault! And that the watermaster is iu-j iu-j eluded in this criticism is by his : own choice. If anyone might have ! , taken exception to the bouquets we handed Ted Kronholm it might ; have been the night marshal. It ! most certainly should not have i been the man who is supposed to give the duties of watermaster his first consideration. Better he I should have waited until his own j toes had been stepped on! |
