Show HE library these days is uncomfortable U able to all The faculty realizing the small size of the room have made madea a study-room study in the West Building for those students who vho have the most of their classes over there A glance into this study-room study usually shows not more than twenty students The calm peace is refreshing shing after the confusion and turmoil of the library But all seem to prefer the latter for the students who should be in the West e Building are massed around the tables in the library Confusion is the result Other students are crowded in the alcoves alcoves alcoves al al- coves to do studying that should not be bedone bedone bedone done there Then the students who go into the alcoves to consult books oftentimes oftentimes oftentimes often often- times either cannot find a seat or find find- ing one labor to shut out the humming and buzzing that is the invariable accompaniment accompaniment accompaniment ac ac- of such a crowd Those who cannot go away to seek an empty room class-room secluded ed corner of the hall or stairs a away way from vigilant eyes Neither the halls haUR nor al alcoves alcoves alcoves al- al coves are the proper places for study Those who have no classes in the West Building naturally do not care to go gothere gothere gothere there to study nor would this be right for the study-room study there does not belong to them Those to whom it does belong should use it and not usurp the rights of the others The present trouble rests with these students If they would use their room the crowd in the library would be relieved and every on one could find a place free from confusion 1 HE Kindergarten Training School was started at the beginning of last last school year with an appropriation from the legislature of for two years Thus it has been on trial Its growth in this short time has been so rapid that the kindergarten is now looked upon as asan asan asan an indispensable feature of the U niver- niver si sity ty After one years year's existence it has shown its right to live by reason of the good it has done It already has two kindergartens in i connection with it These are not free but a light tuition fee is charged that the appropriation of the legislature may be used only for the training school These two kindergartens maintained as they are in public school buildings are showing the city the need for free kindergartens in all the schools Besides this the training school has hast t taken ken up another needed work and has I r organized a mothers' mothers class that is doing good earnest work The training school itself has increased ed wonderfully The number of those registered for this course is twice as large as last year Thus the two ye years years' rs' rs trial has built up so strong a department in the University that we look upon it as necessary and indispensable no longer a trial but a permanent institution A UT iT HAS been the aim of the Faculty in the past to give the students all the freedom possible regarding their behavior behavior behavior be be- havior in and about the University building building building build build- ing assuming that they understand what is expected of them Rules have been formulated and restrictions imposed only in cases of necessity and even then they are often not applicable to a majority of the students for as a rule no fault can be found with their deportment There is a general tendency however wi with th many to rush into recitation rooms while classes are in session diverting the at attention attention of the students and annoying the instructors by opening the door and then slamming them in their hasty retreat Occasional intrusions of this sort could be overlooked but they are areso areso areso so frequent as to interfere seriously with class work Indeed the instructors have been requested by the Faculty to make a special appeal in each of their classes There is no excuse on the part of the student other than thoughtless or carelessness care care- le developed in some cases into a habit This was proved last year when daily programs were posted up on the thedoor thedoor f door of each recitation The necessary necessary necessary i essary information was so handy that often the he trouble was Vas not taken to read it The matter may seem to some to he be of but little importance but it is getting r. r I j so common as to JustI justify f the h e a adoption d optIon 0 of f very d decisive measures f 3 |
