Show t Tt A BIT OF ANCIENT ISTO HISTORY Y l J I While the University is rejoicing over its munificent treatment by the Governor Gover Gover- nor and legislators the following reminiscence reminiscence reminiscence re re- may not be out of place Perhaps ps there are few people among us today who know that just after the passage passage passage pas pas- sage of the act in 1850 by th the Legislative Legisla Legisla- tive Assembly of the Provisional Government Government Government Govern Govern- ment incorporating the II University of the State of Des Deseret ret President Brigham Young selected a site for the institution on the east bench at or very near the spot where it is now decided to place our University So confident was President Young and the people at that time that a great educational institution would be established on the eastern eminence overlooking overlooking overlooking over over- looking our city that during the years 1851 and 1852 a tract of land about forty acres in extent was cleared of cobblestones cobble cobblestones cobblestones stones and boulders thus partly ing the ground for the er erection of build build- 1 ings These stones were collected and j arranged as a rude wall enclosing the site a Some day the whole history of the 1 University will be written As part of this history must come from bits and fragments similar to the above while we can let us collect and preserve those fragments so that this history ma may be beas beas as complete and perfect as possible O.
