Show Dixie Named A New Orleans bank was responsible responsi-ble for the popular term "Dixie," applied to the land below the Mason-Dixon Mason-Dixon line. Henry E. Elrod, Houston Hous-ton engineer and numismatician, said the Citizens bank of New Orleans Or-leans was the originator, through its 10 piastre notes. The notes were issued in 1852, printed half in French and half in English. On the face of the note was the word "Ten" and its corresponding French word, "Dix." Southerners called the bills "Dixie." In those days, states issued is-sued their own money and much of it was almost worthless. The New I Orleans bank was in prosperous condition, con-dition, however, and the bills spread over the southland, which gradually gradual-ly became known as the land of the "Dixies," and finally. Dixieland. |
