Show SituatiOEu s Los Angeles, California August 13, 1934 With the coming of the fall fair and livestock show season, indications indi-cations are that the number and quality of exhibits at the various western shows will excel anything in recent years. The Great Western Livestock show at Los Angeles has announced earlier ear-lier dates this year (November 17th to 22nd), the dates being advanced so that exhibitors may make the Portland Port-land show, then Los Angeles and then go east to Chicago or other shows. A representative of the Great Western Wes-tern show recently completed a survey sur-vey covering several western states and reports a great deal of interest among exhibitors representing all classes of livestock. It is surprising how these breeders have carried on through the discouraging period of the past few years, often sacrificing everything during the depression but the blood lines of their flocks and herds. There is something in the makeup of breeders of well bred livestock that will be found in few other lines of endeavor; that is a deep pride of achievement in which financial gain many times is overlooked in the pursuit pur-suit of producing a better quality of animal. ! It was truly said long years ago! that the prosperity of nations lies in: their flocks and herds, and the foun- i w - dation of these flocks and herds i in the hands of men who understand The livestock show is the displa; window in which the achievement of these men may be displayed to th public, and they are of vital impor tance from an educational stand point, not only to the consumini public, but to the industry itself ii giving breeders an opportunity ti make comparisons in methods an 'to benefit by the experience of on 1 another. ! The livestock show is one of th few places where everyone is striv ing- harmoniously toward one end with elimination of selfish interes on the part of the individual for thi benefit of the general scheme o: things. Attendance by the genera public at the various livestock show; lends encouragement to the breedei and assures him that his efforts hav not been in vain. No matter hov ' long a person has lived in a city there is something in all of us thai I responds to the sight of fine live-stock. live-stock. Most of the older generatior in the cities have lived upon the soi at some time in their lives, so thej are naturally keenly interested ir livestock, and the younger generation genera-tion seems to have such an interest as an heritage from their forbears Many thousands of youngsters, boys and girls, both from city and country, coun-try, visit these livestock shows eaer year. |
