Show WILD FLOWERS IN ZION PARK .ARE AT THEIR BEST ZION NATT, PARK, UTAH,' May 9 The great walls of Zion Canyon, in Utah, noted throughout the world for their beauty of coloring, are rivaled at present by one of the most wonderful wild flower displays that has occured in the canyon in recent years. According to E. T. Scoyen, Park Superintendent, Zion National Park is one of the few areas left in the United Unit-ed States today where the nature lovers lov-ers can enjoy an exhibit of flowers adapted to a' semi-arid climate, and still growing under natural . conditions. condi-tions. Flowers, in common with all growing grow-ing things, have many natural obstacles ob-stacles to overcome in the struggle for existence. However, within the park, they are protected from the most destructive of all their enemies man. People entering the park are required to admire these easily de- stroyed beauties as and where they ; grow; because the picking of wild j flowers, except for scientific collec-! tions or other educational purposes, ! is prohibited. During the few short years that this regulation has been enforced in this particular park, the flowers have gratefully repaid the protection by blooming in added profusion pro-fusion each year. The visitor entering the park at present can hardly fail to notice the orange and scarlet patches along the road made by the mallow and Indian paint brush. Closer inspection will reveal the graceful sego lily, and smaller flowers such as the spider-worth, spider-worth, shooting star, and others. In the cooler and . more shaded places, especially on the trail to The Narrows, Nar-rows, the columbine, clematis and scarlet bugler give a colorful foreground fore-ground to great landscape pictures. Finally, so common in this section that it is hardly noticed, is the lowly cactus now bearing its exquisitely beautiful blossoms in sections where other plants are unable to grow. The added color on the barren hillsides cannot go unnoticed, and disproves the oft repeated statement that this plant is useless for any human purpose. |
