Show Faculty Could Change Poor University System Almost every professor on this campus will agree when you are talking to him in a n confidential vein ein that many litany features of our present school system ar are deplorable Some things are held to be actually in in- in jurious However most of the professors are arc proclaiming proclaiming proclaiming pro pro- claiming that the bad features cannot be changed Now there is in existence at the University of f Chicago a 3 system which meets with almost unanimous unanimous approval This system provides 1 That a student may study at his own rate of speed and take examinations when he is ready for them 2 It considers the student tobe to be an individual and not an object for mass production 3 It puts the professors professors professors pro pro- on their metal by making class attendance non-compulsory non and by having the examinations given by persons other than the instructor 4 This plan assumes that a university student has come to school in order to study and refuses to handicap those students who want to learn by making them slow down for those who cant can't or wont The Chronicle is satisfied that there are arc many features of the Chicago system which would be impracticable impracticable im im- im- im pr practicable in a state institution However we are convinced that there are many things in it which could be modified so as to fit our needs and contribute contribute contribute contri contri- bute to our educational efficiency The answer as asto asto asto to how this is to be done seems to be very simple simp e and clear We Ve have among our faculty members some who have a reputation for outstanding mental abil abil- It is suggested that if these would apply their minds to finding a means for bringing into our school system things which they unite in finding praiseworthy that their efforts would meet with considerable success Every teacher knows that students students students stu stu- dents vary so widely in abilities that to attempt to educate them in the same maner and at the same rate of speed is the height of folly They also admit that education is really an individual matter That these same teachers have the ability to bring the system into accord with their principles and ideas can not be doubted The only r thing they need to do dois dois dois is to try J.
