Show HIGHWAY JOINS UTAH-ARIZONA Hours will be cut off the trip from Salt Lake City to Flagstaff and Phoenix, Phoe-nix, Ariz., this month by the completion comple-tion of a 40-mile stretch of highway north from Cameron, Ariz., the Utah state highway commission has been advised. The contractors are finishing a month ahead of time, according to the Arizona state highway department, depart-ment, on one of the largest contracts ever let by that department. Drainage Drain-age features included 43 bridges of more than 20-foot span in the 40 miles. mil-es. From Salt Lake to the Arizona state line,, south of Kanab, Utah, there are already two routes, most of the distance being highly improved roadway. From the state line to Jacobs Ja-cobs lake ,in the Kaibab national forest, for-est, there is a newly constructed gravel road ,and an improved forest road has been constructed part of the distance from the lake toward the Grand canyon bridge over the Colorado Color-ado at Marble canyon ,near Lees Ferry. About 60 miles of roadway remain to be improved between Jacobs lake and the end of the stretch now being completed. The new route, U. S. No. 89, will be remarkable for the unusual scenery along it, and for the many points of surpassing scenic or scientific interest inter-est that may be reached by short side trips. According to highway officials, offic-ials, however ,its' chief value will be economic, infurnishing a direct automobile auto-mobile route never before available between the populated centers of Utah and Arizona. |
