The wonderful development of the explosives manufacturing Industry iu the United States during the lust four years is shown in a report issued bj Uncle Sam's bureau of mines. In the year 1913, which was a normal nor-mal year, the exports reached $."5,5-li .077. The following year, in which the European war started, the exports $10,037,."S7 ; in 1015, $18.S,!U0,$!":i ; and in 1916, when the entire industry had been thoroughly organized, the total w as $717,144,049. The total production of explosives in the United States during 191G. exclusive ex-clusive of exports, was 2o'70S tons, an Increase of 22,000 tons over the previous year. The amount of so-called permissible, explosives,' those that have passed severe tests of the bureau of miiuM and w hich are used in dangerous mines because of their degree of safety, was 20,r00,r21 pounds, an increase of 5,000.000 pounds as compared with 1915. The production for 1910 is segregated segre-gated as follows: Black powder, 215,-575,025 215,-575,025 pounds; "high" explosives other oth-er than permissible explosives, 255, 154,787 pounds; and permissible explosives, ex-plosives, 34,085,2-10 pounds.
