United States DI D Department of Agriculture ThE Th figures are based on about head of breeding stock owned b by experIenced experienced stock live owners Besides the same persons own fowls on which the poultry results are based All of these stockmen have for several years an years an average of at nine used nine used purebred purebred pure- pure bred jred sires to head their herds berds and figures mentioned were obtained during the last part of 1021 1921 in a perio perlo peri- peri o oc of marked depression in the livestock livestock live lIve- stock industry PaltI Partly for that reason reason rea rca son they are considered conservative even though pointing to an unusually high value of purebreds over common common common com com- mon stock The Time purpose of obtaining this new Information was to supply an increasing increasing ing demand for tor facts of of greater scope than single time short-time observations With the development of the Federal Federal- State campaign for Better Detter Sires Sires Sires- Better Detter Stock the time Department has re- re r 1 Character Soundness and Good Con Con- formation an unusually large number of requests asking what purebreds can cando cando cando do for the man mau who does not aspire to become a n specialized d breeder What can I expect from purebred sires or from both purebred sires and dams as ns a utility proposition 1 That II Is essentially what scores o of thoughtful thought thought- ht- ht ful Cui people want to know Superiority of Purebreds The superiority based on utility of ot purebred over o common stock is evident from the following figures Superior Earning Power Class Per cent Dairy Cattle Poultry Swine Sheep Horses Horses 37 Beef Cattle Goats Average for tor all aU classes 9 weighted 40 04 The relatively high percentages representing representing representing rep rep- resenting the earning power of well well- bred dairy cattle and poultry over o scrubs are explained doubtless by the greater facilities for keeping production production tion records of these classes of lIvestock live livestock livestock stock thereby contributing to their Improvement A Profitable Investment The average reported Increase In financial returns from stock live operations oper oper- traceable to the use of at purebred purebred purebred pure pure- bred sires was per cent This result includes the returns from both the sale of breeding stock stork and of animals animals ani ani- mals and products for market The data appear to show v exclusively that well bred animals are good property not simply for the time experienced breeder breed breed- er but for every farmer willing to give them the proper care and opportunity to prove their worth The bureau has abundant evidence corroborating this belief One farmer relates that the Impelling force which prompted him to acquire purebreds was the need for more Income HEr He lie r reasoned that ownership of purebreds was not the proverbial wealthy mans man's diversion but the poor mans man's necessity lie He obtained the best foundation stock stockA A Purebred Sow within his means and gave gaye It good care It Increased his returns per cen cent t. t factors factors 1 1 Their own quality and 2 the human buman factor especially skill In management The Time evidence gathered by the the Department t shows that stock live owners are becoming more marc and more insistent on records of production as a means of at distin distin- distinguishing desirable purebreds from tram those of or less merit The Inquiry shows hows that for the most part purebred animals of good type are readily obtainable But special requirements or a n desire for the thc less common breeds generally involve some dl difficulties and higher prices About 98 per cent of at the
