S Hoy Hay spent several days in Steamboat last week on his way back to Denver which he now calls caUs home after spending several months in his old familiar haunts Browns Brown's park says the Pilot His purpose there was to gather some additional dates and data for a book ho Is writIng writing writing writ writ- ing to be called Browns Drowns Hole That was the original name of Browns Brown's park This book Is sure to be of thrillIng thrilling thrill thrill- Ing interest for it will give In detail detail de de- de- de i tail tall the history of that section of the country which has been the scene of more of historical action than any other part of the state For years it was the rendezvous of outlaws of or cattle rustlers and bad men It has witnessed killings without number It was the hiding place of Lant and Tracy and Valentine Hoy Hay brother of the author lost his life liCe in their pursuit pursuit pursuit pur pur- suit while acting as RS a deputy of Sheriff Neiman Nelman Browns Brown's park is also the oldest settled portion of the Western Vestern slope Its Us sheltered position made it ideal for wintering cattle and as early as I 2 1871 George Baggs wintered cattle there Ib Ito was for him that Baggs Wyo was named He was a Texas cattleman and in the days when the ranges there became overcrowded Baggs drove a bunch of cattle to the Northwestern states He found Browns Brown's hole a fine tine place to winter his stock That was one of the most severe winters the western country ever experienced On the plains more than half of the cattle died Iron fron exposure Baggs had a herd of head Lead and brought brough them through the winter without a r. single loss In the spring Baggs Daggs started north with his herd At Evanston he sold the bunch to Crawford Thompson and told them where he had spent the winter and of the fine range and climate of that locality The new owners sent sent the herd herd back to Browns Brown's hole in charge of 01 their em em- J. J S S. S Hoy The latter had freighted across across' the plains first from Omaha and then from the terminus terminus terminus ter ter- minus of the Union Pacific as It advanced advanced advanced ad ad- rapidly westward J J. J S. S Hoy entered Browns Brown's park on Nov 15 16 1872 That has been his home ever since up until the past few years He has witnessed all of Its wild history and arid has a first hand knowledge of at the tho happenings of that isolated valley He took up a ranch and raised cattle and was active In Inthe Inthe inthe the life of the section He knows the real inside of the intrigues the crimes all of the early happenings and he possesses the ability to tell the story In an attractive way so the forthcoming book will be a notable contribution to the history of the West |
