The most Important step thus fur toward the operation of the Panama canal took place Friday when the sea-going tugboat Gatun, drawing twelve and a half feet of water, was punned successfully through the Gatun locks, and Into Gatun lake. This was the first attempt made to operate the locks on the canal aud the result was highly pleasing to Colonel Goethals, chairman of the canal commission, and canal officials generally. Hundreds of cheering men, women and children withstood the burning rays of the tropic sun to see the act of passing the first vessel from sea level to the level of Gatun lake, which , Friday had reached a height of a little over 63 feet, or within 20 feet of its normal level. |
