Ashby former resident resident resi resl dent of Delta holding two of his I f framed and mounted Indian arrowhead arrowhead arrow arrow- head exhibits and below them f four our other large frames of designs he had made Lin has altogether arrowheads of many colors many sizes and many materials all gathered from the area of Millard Millard Mil Mil- l lard ard County These he hc has sorted i into nto choice assemblies some for or variations in color some for form and so grouped as to form designs thus one very choice frame portrays portrays portrays por por- trays an Indian mounted on a horse at full gallop pursuing a buffalo and the hunter sinking a alance alance lance l ance into the side of the fleeing animal The Indian words for buffalo falo hunt are Tina Muru Another depicts an Indian in a canoe another an an- another other a large spread eagle with a asun asun asun sun emblem above One choice frame spells VALLEY Still another grouping without spelling but showing all sizes and forms torms of very choice examples of Indian craftsmanship in shaping arrowheads s. s Lin has a very fine assortment That it has merit is attested by LIFE picturing it It is not just a cigar box full of specimens butan butan but butan an artistic display showing care showing thought in arranging and above all showing a man making full use of oC a hobby And he has done excellently by it I am preparing a small book on Millard County for Boy Scouts and andin andin andin in It I said Many fine collections of have been gathered mostly in the area near the Hot Springs which at one time was one of the finest fields in the entire area having in mind the wonderful wonder wonder- ful display of Lins Lin's hobby As an illustration of the appeal of that field one Sunday my wife and I went out there and we counted the number of cars there for the same purpose we were were were- and there were THREE FIFTY-THREE cars with an average average aver aver- age estimated at three persons in each car or over fans squinting squinting squint squint- squinting ing at the ground stooping picking picking pickIng pick pick- ing up and putting into a pocket what they found round And let me add they all found something that day for my wife wiCe and I did well In that area yes It has been well worked over yes many have been found there Have all been picked up After any hard wind another choice one may have the dust cover blown off it and there you are with a dandy found even today On my suggestion to the Japanese who formed a small Archeological Archeological Arch Arch- Society that field and the Marshall Tract was recommended recommended recommended mended to them they got many hu hundreds even as late as their occupancy occupancy oc oc- occupancy oc- oc here And all are not picked picked picked pick pick- ed up yet Boy Scouts can find lotof lots lot lotsof lotsof of interest every summer taking trips out and hunting for these finds Their work will surely bring brini results If I should say that ten thousand thousand and arrowheads have been found in m Millard County that guest mate would not be be far from rom right i Lin Un has I had something over 1000 Barclay and Emory John had hada a great many over my number I then add to that scattered cigar boxes filled and I 1 have seen I I many the total will well run over Lin has displayed his collection in department stores in exhibits and had gumption enough to keep it intact intact- not to part with it it not notto notto notto to give ive specimens away and not notto notto notto to let it fritter out of his hands That gumption some of the others of us lack for today it is Lin who has them whereas my own and other collections have dwindled Until until un Un- til we no longer feel pride in them So to Boy Soy Scouts I say Go out Go out often Hunt Find them And keep the choicest ones for yourself never parting with them It is I later than you think I I |
