M Roper of Oak City Utah have received the following communication from the war department relative to their son Capt Hugh R. R Roper pilot of ofa ofa ofa a Liberator bomber who has been missing from the low level bombing bombing bombing bomb bomb- ing attack on the oil fields ields in Romania Aug 1 1943 Additional information available available available avail avail- able in the War Department In Indicates Indicates Indicates In- In that your son was one of a crew of eleven men aboard a B 24 Liberator bomber which failed to return from a bombing mission to the Oil Fields Romania on 1 August 1943 On the way back to base at Ben- Ben gazi Africa this plane collided with another B 24 just as they emerged from a dense cloud mass No parachutes were seen to leave this this- four out of the other plane three of them A recent interrogation of these three survivors revealed that the plane crashed near the peak of a mountain in southwestern southwest southwest- em ern Bulgaria These men also stated stated stated stat stat- ed that they did not see or hear of any from the other plane one adding that some BulI Bulgarians Bulgarians Bul Bul- I whom he believed to be beI I members of the Bulgarian Border Patrol told him that all of the crew were dead Capt Roper was in one of the first B 24 bomber groups located in England and had completed 24 missions in that theatre before being being being be be- ing selected for the mission He was holder of the air medal Distinguished flying cross Silver star and Purple heart Besides his parents he Is survived by the following brothers and sisters sisters sis sis- Parley Roper Mrs Lemira Dutson Mrs 1 Ethel Mathews of Oak City Henry Roper Caliente Nevada Mrs Mabel Schick Santa SantaRosa SantaRosa SantaRosa Rosa California Mrs Mary Jeffery Delta and Mrs Lucile Hales Des- Des eret I |
