Show MUST FOWL QUARTERS BE FOUL QUARTERS QUARTER n nM M Married Main men so ao states tho the wisecracking wisecracking wise wise- cracking vaudeville performer have haTe their b batter tv halves but bat bachelors lye totter better quartu While a groat r many people may take Issue with the foregoing statement It would be a ahard ahard ahard hard thing to dI disprove prove that the majority majority ma mL- of chickens being raised Inthis in inthis inthis this country are entitled to better quarters and do not get them It ItIs Itis Itis is certain that a distressingly large proportion of the poultry being raised raised raised rais rais- ed today would fall tall under that cat cat- egory All too often the matter of ot poultry poultry poultry poul poul- try housing Is left until everything else elso has ben provided for and then any kind of shack will be hastily put together often in in ina a a poor location which Is deliberately chosen because It Is really fit for nothing else As As a matter chatter of fact the location that Is fit for nothing else is usually also unfit for tor poultry raising but that t apparently Is not taken Into consideration I shall briefly describe describe describe de de- de- de scribe o a 0 type of house which after with many kinds over twenty years I a am convinced Is the cheapest most practical healthiest more and easiest to put up as a poultry house for tor the average average aver Lver- age farm flock of which I havo have any knowledge If It I felt otherwise It ItIs Itis itis is quite certain all my own own poultry houses would not be built on this plan My Ideal poultry house Is the one one- way shed roof open front fresh air type that admits plenty of sunshine and plenty of fresh air at all times without drafts and faces south It should be 20 f feet et wide or deep from north to south and as long as necessary necessary sary to the flock A Ahouse Ahouse house 20 by 20 feet Is a nice size for foran foran an ordinary small farm flock It will comfortably house hens of the larger breeds and Leghorns in all cold and moderate climates In warmer climates 25 26 per cent more can bo be housed without crowding This ia la due fast that the fowls do not have to 10 be housed many days during the winter In the warmer sections sections sections' of the United States States States' It Isa is isa isa a great great mistake to cr crowd Wd chickens chickens into a house as they should have plenty of room at all times This house should be 9 feet high in front and 6 feet high In the rear rear There sho should be a trap door 10 or 12 Inch Inch- I es wide along tho the north wall ju Just t under the tho roof that should be opened open ed during hot weather for at night During the fall and winter and spring the north east and west walls should be ats ap a absolutely airtight airtight airtight air air- tight as they can b be made In a long longhouse longhouse longhouse house there should should be a solid soUd partition partition partition parti parti- tion from the back almost to the front every 30 to 35 36 feet to prevent drafts sweeping from one end of the house to the other other othor at nt night The openings In the front are areal aUthe all aU the ventilators a poultry house needs and the larger luger these permanent permanent permanent perma perma- nent openings are the healthier the fowls wil wU bo be as long as they do not freeze their combs and toes By having the roosts along the north wall there ther will be no drafts at night by having baving the north east and west walls closed tight evon if the south Is la open Every poultry house should have havea a floor floor either either concrete or wood Itla It ItIs la Is la to ke keep p a dirt floor clean cloan and sanitary The fl floors r in all my houses are made of of- tongue and grooved flooring that is absolutely absolutely absolutely tight All my houses are upon up upon upon on posts two or three feet high which provides a cool place during the thet h at of i summer A good roof root Is very essential as a poultry house must be kept dry if the fowls areto are areto areto to be kept healthy The he usual mate material ma ma- te rial used for shed roofs is either roofing paper or galvanized Iron Iron Is usually the more durable but it is also very hot during hot weather er lf lf if the rot Is not high A straw loft or a ceIlIng under the rafters will make the house a great deal cooler In summer and also warmer In winter Do not have havo the roof too low nor too high especially up Inthe in inthe inthe the north parts of the country country- The house should have a clearance space of 5 6 3 or 6 G feet In the rear and 8 or 9 in the front inside This poultry house Is s equally goodin good goodIn In any climate and at any season season of the the year the only difference e being in the construction of pf the front o- o In the southern states the front should be left almost entirely open at all times Umes while up north where the weather Is cold most ost of the front should be closed for the protection of the fowls In the northern northern northern nor nor- thern states quite a portion of the front can be bo covered with glass substitutes substitutes substitutes sub sub- to admit light and sunshine an and sufficient air for ventilation can be ha had through openings that are covered with thin muslin curtains during cold weather In J i climates climates 1 similar to Missouri the openings inthe In Inthe Inthe the front should equal about 10 per percent percent percent cent of the f floor or area of ot the house and these openings should be left open at all times except In in extreme cold weather or while storming from the south when a thin muslin curtain can be pulled down Of course some rain wll wU beat In Inthe Inthe inthe the southern openings at times but the harm from this Is trivial as ascom compared compared com pared tol to havIng the front closed or nearly so The floor should be sloping eloping a n little little little lit lit- tle to the front so that tl the tho e rain that should blow In will run to the front and out No ordinary I glass windows windows' are needed In n the front of a poultry house and very few fow any place else The rh front of ot the house should be boarded up solid for three feet above the floor andall openings should be above this In cold the north east and W west st walls wal s should e e made warm Ship Ship lap lap or dr drop drop siding should be carefully put on as to leave no cracks and then this should be lined on the inside or out with two twp or three ply roofing paper securely securely se se- curey put on A 1 house use built bunt on this plan will always be b be a source of pride to Its owner and will pay Teal real dividends In healthier more valuable more and more productive fowls Anyone who is interested Interested Interested In In- in better housing for fowls and desire further information may me to this address Dr L L.
