Iroper care of the valves and regular regrlndlng are therefore to be numbered among the "ex- - v penses" which are really econ-omics, for they will pay big dividends In efficiency and mile-age. Worn valve stems also cause leaks which are quite as serious as those of the valves them-selves. In this case the failure of the valve stem to lit snugly into the gulder allows air to be drawn past the stem Into the cylinder, thinning the mixture to such an extent that the engine falls to run regularly unless the mixture Is made richer, while throttling down to less than ten miles an hour is almost impos-sible. The fact that valve stems need attention is usually apparent from the hissing sound characteristic of this trouble. (Copyrlht, HI J, bj Tha Whealar Syndicate, Inc.) ij .n .' News Ilappeniogs tec3moimtam States Spokane. For miles in every direc tion, along the coast, In the Cascades, through eastern Washington and northern Idaho In the Rockies, as far eastward as Montana, the Pacific northwest is under a 'smoke pall. Three months virtually without rain, even in the Puget Sound country, where rainfall usually is incessant, has resulted in the most serious for-est fire situation that the northwest has experienced since 190J. Millions of feet of choice pine, fir, cedar and spruce, covering thousands of acres scattered over this territory, already are a total loss. Every available man forest ranger and day laborer has been pressed into service in the vain efforts to check the flames. Aero-planes have been used to locate the small blazes from which the larger start and every modern method of lo-cating and fighting fire has been tried, and has failed. Officially, the situa-tion Is characterized as "most ser-ious." Wlnnemucca. A meteor fell north of Wlnnemucca, shaking ail the frame houses in town and awakening many people, the impact sounding like a muffled explosion in a mine. A party of young people returning from a dance at Uolconda saw the meteor, which is believed to have fallen abor.t a mile from town. Several meteors, large and small, were observed earlier in the night. Moscow. That the nation-al forests of Montana and northern Idaho will be called upon within the next few years to furnish the major-ity of telephone and telegraph poles used In the east, is the belief of for-estry officials, as a result of the in-roads made by the chestnut blight on the timber supply in that section. Ac-cording to forestry officials, Montana iml Idaho now are shipping lare quantities of poles to the Atlantic sea-board: There is considerable cedar in Montana and the supply Is as yot prac-tically untouched, It is said. CHEMIST'S CORKS ARE IDEAL a 6peclal Guns Are Part of Equipment . on Many of Most Modern Cars Having Lubricating 8ystems Clean Out Yearly. Ojio of the most vexatious greasing .robleni Is to insert grease through a . pleghole larger than the nozzle of the gun. To keep the grease from going evory where but Into the hole, obtain ; a cork about the size of the largest plug on your cur. Bore a hote In this cork so that It will slide over the stem of the grease gun, and when you tire filling a large hole simply push tli In cork down to fill the oversb.e . opening. Chemists' rubber corks are Jdeul for this purpose. A rag or some string packing wound around the stem of the gun can be forced down to act . a would the cork. Cars Hay Greasing Systems. i Many curs now equipped with greas ing systeiiM using a special gun which connects with the nipples on the car. Vlila makes It eusy to do some advis-able cleaning of the grease passages wut once a season. Attach the emp-ty gun, release the plunger so that it cm ii he worked like a pump, and then .proceed to force air through the grease connections. This will serve to clean out the distributing grooves Jji .which, grease residue has probably congealed ' during the winter. To make still more certain of perfect lubrication, precede (he air pressure treatment with a slm-H-treatment of kerosene to flush out the dirty old grease, which will be wen coining out on the-- opposite side of (he spring shackle. Then use air pressure to force out the kerosene be-- a fore applying freah lubricant. Other Places for Grease. Nor is greasing something to be put only into gun cups and other speckled placea Wipe some grease on the wheel shoulders against which the demount-able rim rests on the Inside. Do this Wmut as often as removal of the rim i required by tire changing. At the me time apply grease sparingly to Jhe rim fasteners and to the rliu bolts. By this practice, nearly all rim aqueuks re permanently ended. The chief objection, apart from en-gineering considerations, is the diffl-cuU- y of making a double gasket Sras prooi'. , Aa I.iger.ioas method bus been devised to eliminate the extra gasket and accomplish the same purpose, it is necessary first, to ftilp the car with prim-ing spark plugs.
