Show THE TRIP TO BAKER NEVADA I It far exceeded expectations The roads weren't half halt as bad as painted the scan scenery ry was grand In sections impressive impress e and full of interest the people the tho best ever and the cave cave cave- well I took down a bushel basket full of ot notes but will not try In this Issue to write them out let that come in a succeeding issue especially especial especial- ly after atter Photographer R R. R D. D Adams has had time to develop some of ot his plates and The Chronicle has halftone halftone half halt tone photos made from them So in a later issue we wo will try to todo todo todo do justice to the whole trip In this issue we will just skim over ov r the thing hurriedly and touch the high spots only The road rond by the side of ot the Marshall Marshall Marshall Mar Mar- shall Tract will improve with the I winters winter's snows and rains At pres pres- ent eat it is a brand new made road soft slow and and the only piece of ot road on the whole trip that is bad That seven miles is worse than any fifty of the whole distance The rest of the roads are good thanks to Hon Steele After leaving the Marshall Project the road Is on the bench is fairly fast surfaced nicely with small pebbles of lava rock and although al alt although al- al t though ough mounting constantly brings you OU easily to Marjam Spring without any crowding in three hours or less The scenery around Marjam Pass is beautiful Great cliffs perpendicular perpendicular perpendicular face br brown wn red and varie varle- gated colors in mild tints with a gorge down that is a beauty it drops in two miles mlles seemingly as much as that down On the sky line lineIn linein linein in one place pla-ce a natural hole through tho the ledge that is an Augusta Bridge in miniature From back near the springs on tl this ls side a vista is had of White Valley when the pass opens out on that valley is seen to be a waste atlow of at low lands as white as the whitest clay with alkali in it can be made the road turns then southwest and the next water is at Cowboy Then Thena a climb through Cowboy Pass and after a wind or two beyond behold the pretty view of ot Snake Snake- Valley with its farms in the distance beautiful beautiful beautiful beau beau- tall trees in clumps and groves showing the presence of at water Ill Smi and Gandy nth W way r up I no north James i nd t Jaines famous ranch a straight ahead past Knoll Spring the dandy ranch of ot Simonson and Cameron called the Simonson ranch We will deal with this In another issue only remarking here that It ItIs ItIs itis Is a thoroughly fine ranch with corn water melons cantaloupes peanuts squash alfalfa hay bay grain and trees galore Wo We stopped at SImonsons SImonson's an hour chewing the rag and sent back a acar acar car and towed Hoctor Doctor Stains Stains' a few tew rods until his chariot charlot began hitting Then in to Baker i Is only seventeen miles on a good road and we arrived arrived arrived ar ar- rived there at noon The dividing line between Utah and Nevada Is ia quite plain on plain on this thin side bone dry dry dry- on that side slightly damp some thought wet Baker Daker Nevada is a small town a hotel a store a garage on the main street and farm houses outlying outlying- A club where Delta made its A pond where they swim in I summer and put up ice in winter A beautiful lawn at Bellander's with the most inviting grass and a a. general hospitality to use that lawn and grass very kl kind d and much ap ap- And the town really turned over overto overto overto to the D Delta bunch Everybody glad to see them glad to show them around The town was ours On the first day twenty six of ot us went down the cave It is wonder wonder- ful Really one ono of Natures Nature's marvels I will not try to describe it except in snatches In this Issue For instance three immense Immens stalagmites were wore named Lincoln's shaft Washington's Column and Grants Grant's Pillar PUlar And they were all of ot that Formed by the hardening of at the lime suspended In water remarkable objects with a beauty betokening the myriad years in the making Just at the entrance of the cave avo Is 18 Lehmans Lehman's grave But that is la goIng go go- going ing too fast Lehman fast Lehman loved his hia cave slept in to it caressed it It curry currycombed currycombed currycombed combed it down mornings and braided braid braid- ed Its mane and tall tail and slicked up Its coat of appearance And when he died he be requested thorn them to bury him with his love So they did And so wrapped up In exploring his cave was Lehman that now the guide puts a candle at his crypt and in the dead stillness of at midnight his spirit walks abroad and explores room after room room or or may bo be seen oozing thru the solid wall and melting D into a alime alime alime lime pillar as aa he traverses his cave Should the wind blow blowout out his candle BO go ardent la to ha ht in his search lurch ho he will ask the visitor for a light light- I know for tor when I 1 was the ho asked mo me three times for a match and the last time I was on my knees praying a-praying that if It ever I got out alive Id I'd ret reform Flash light pictures were taken in large opening in th the cave one with the camera fully sixty feet Cram from the theother theother theother other side with the party grouped In the tumbled Jumbled mass of ot for for- mation Wonderful I 1 have been down metal mines in Cripple Creek Colorado and this m may y be likened somewhat to that In respect to the tortuous windings WIndingS' in a narrow slope I following a fissure then widening out Int into roms In other places In one place called Fat Mans Man's Misery the editor was darned good and glad he was the lean lenn hungry starved cre creature ture he is for after atter crawling a hundred yards or so on hands and knees or bent double with your back banging and bumping bumping bump bump- ing against the top walls there sat Hon lion Steele in a huge throne in the Kings King's Palace laug laughing at us guys It would have havo been difficult to have carried a corpse out so we refrained retrained from that murder But his margin was used up an and he never wants to try to pull that stunt again Think in your imagination of ot coral coral cor cor- al nl reefs built by the he slow accretion of lime deposited think of pillars of curtains of ropes of basket weaving think of ot grottos clefts cletts vistas and what nots nets think of ot dripping dripping drip drip- ping w water ter on myriad stalactites of water underfoot and again of ot perfect perfect per per- dryness ss think of ot what made this cataclysmic wonder then Jumble jumble jumble Jum jum- ble the whole thing together in your r minds mind's eye oyo and Go out and see It for tor yourself Then you can fit tit your I words together together to to- gether Bother for a description Back from the cave a royal good dinner was awaiting us Sports with horse racing broncho o riding foot racing and then short program In Inthe Inthe inthe the dance hall with some really fine tine music from rom Ely some talks and winding up with three hearty huzzahs huzzahs huzzahs huz- huz waltz was played And supper at twelve with ice cream Sunday morning g some were out at t Silver Cr Creek ek b buying a n. string of fish from a small boy and coming back to Delta lying as usual bout their catch Some were hors de combat whatever that means means- I believe its it's an an indoor sport but I didn't partake Some were shaking hands as they parted with old or new made friends And altogether everyone had a huge time Delta is deeply indebted to the people of at that region Including includIng including ing Garrison larrison Snake Valley Smith- Smith yule Gandy and Baker aker tor
