T Theobald Surveyor USE OF LIME AND GYPSUM On Our Local Soils The soils of ot 1 this region are com corn composed composed posed largely of at silt sUt loams beams and fine fino sandy loams loans Many of these show a great tendency to bake and resist cultivation This Is particular particularly ly Iy the case case with the lighter soils An analysis shows them to possess a large percentage of at colloidal clay clayThis clayThis This colloidal matter causes the sol solto to co become sticky when wet and hart har w when en dry The application of ot man manure ure usually prevents this baking However it has been found in some Instances In the lighter soils tha thama ma manure ure does not decompose and cure CUff this baking tendency There are two possible explanations for tor this first the soil soU is too alkaline to allow the bacteria to work ork and secondly the secondly the co colloidal matter practically embalms th the manure thus shutting out theair the the- theair theair air and bacteria If it is because of or the first explanation then drainage is the only remedy It If It is due to the colloidal matter then the application appU cation of lime and gypsum but once to the soils will probably solve the difficulty Lime and flocculates flocculates lates these colloids and allows the b bacteria to work Some of the farmers farmers farm farmers ers in this region have applied line lime Ih H Hand and it has been found that the soil soU has developed a better and th in manure has decomposed decompose quite r road read 11 ily There Is plenty of lime In the soil for all plant purposes and It t is really an unusual recommendation to suggest lime for these western soils however howe there is apparently not enough calcium In proper com corn to precipitate the colloid J and allow the manure to work worl Hence the application of ot a salt un under under under der these circumstances is perhaps a wise practice There is one danger I In the use of lime particularly so If it becomes a general practice th lime when in the he soil soU changes to a soluble carbonate form then react with the already present lug sodium carbonate the black al alkali alkali kali kail salt It would be better practice for tor the farmers If gypsum com corn commonly commonly called Land Paster was ap ai applied applied plied piled instead of ot lime It will havethe havethe have havethe the same granulating effect and wilnot wil wll wilnot not be followed by bad after atter effects It finally forms in the soil soU after 1 i ihas l' l has done its good work sodium sul su- sulphate su- su phate thel least harmful of all the tho white alkali salts When soils bake and manure re refuses refuses re- re fuses to decompose and destroy tho the baking tendency the tho following practice practice practice tice will undoubtedly undoubtedly- prove to b ba be beneficial Plow the tho land in the tal then apply broadcast as a top dress- dress ng rig about to Ibs lbs of gypsum Land Plaster to the acre In tha springtime apply a light top dressing dress dress' dressing dressing ing of manure disk it then harrow harro and float the ground If It lime or gypsum gypsum gypsum gyp gyp- sum Is used never fail to apply manure man manure manure man man- ure afterwards either In the late fall fallor fallor fallor or early spring The Tho land laud plaster can be obtained from tho the Nephi Land Compan Company Company Com Com- Through the farm bureau it itcan itcan itcan pan pany can be be obtained in carload lots at ata ata ata a very reasonable price THOMAS L L.
