Show I Letter from Missionaries Chicago Ill October 16 1917 1017 Millard l County Chronicle Delta Utah Gentlemen Thru the courtesy cO of or one of-one one of your our subscribers John Alve Alvey w we have been able to read In the Chronicle each week the news from home No doubt all readers leaders of your YOUl paper are somewhat interested in the soldIers soldiers soldiers sold sold- who go out for Christ as well as those who go at our Country's call During our stay In Iowa we have labored as companions for about aboul seven seven seven sev sev- en months Early this summer one of or us Elder Hansen was to Illinois so had ad not each we ve SO ll seen other since since till we we men in Carthage September 1917 We Ve in company company company com com- pany with several other missionaries of Illinois and Io Iowa va visited the old l Carthage g j jail l wh where r tI the e Prophet rop l t. t J Josepn ana anu ms nis brother Hyrum Hyrum Hy- Hy rum were murdered June 1844 1841 The jail jall is now owned by the Church i and has been used as a dwelling house louse for years but at present Is un un- un- un occupied In going front from Carthage to Nauvoo we went thru Keokuk Iowa Here we saw the great greal Keokuk dam and locks on the Mississippi l Fifteen turbines now being run produce horse power When sale is found for the electricity the plant will be enlarged to twice the present capacity t Sunday morning Se September found us walking up the road leading leadIng leading lead- lead Ing from the ferry landing to the i city of Nauvoo Thru the kindness of the people living In the Joseph Smith mansion most of us were permitted permitted permitted per per- to lodge there The others stayed at the home of Sidney Rig- Rig deon In the afternoon we ve met beneath the quiet shade of the trees now growing rank on the old Mormon cemetery Here we sang songs of Zion and enjoyed an Inspiring testimony testimony testimony mony meeting Monday 1 we began our sight-seeing sight of Nauvoo Nauvoo Is generally generall known as being situated on one of the most beautiful sights on the Mississippi Mississippi Mis Mis- River ie T The e cit city I Is lo located ate in a 0 bend or of tile the river vain wain street running north and south from river to river Very few of the buildings which once adorned Main street are arenow arenow arenow now standing Those of note are the Joseph Smith mansion Nauvoo House and the tho homes frames of the Prophets Prophet's Prophets Prophet's Prophets Prop Prop- het's father John Taylor laylor and Sidney Sidne In Nauvoo at the present time only about one hundred of the theold theold theold old Mormon houses are Intact and about half of ot these are unused Many of the homes have been altered and repaired while others are fallIng falling fall fall- falling ing in ruin With the building up of towns down the river such as Quincy Illinois the fin brick which were put Into homes In Nauvoo began began began be be- gan to disappear on rafts and were used in buildings down there Nauvoo has a n population of about one thousand It once was the home of over twenty thousand people peo peo- The chief occupation is that of raising grapes over seventy carloads carloads car car- carloads loads being shipped every year The rhe shipping point Is from Montrose Iowa after being ferried across from Nauvoo We Ve find the people very friendly and they are looking for our people to return and rebuild their city Hancock county Elders doIng doIng doing do- do Ing country work are very kindly re re- re- re In fact we find the tho people In this country more moro friendly than we vo do the people In other counties where our labors labois have called us In visiting these places dear deal to our memory one cannot but feel the determination and steadfastness of character of ot those who so freely gave their lives that truth should not perish from rom the earth Into our lives comes a new feeling of duty that of helping to complete the work they so bravely began Yours sincerely Elders H.
