Show New Newspaper paper Men Make Trip to Dixie Dixie and I Little Zion Canyon I I Since our ou last last- isue e had the pleasure of visiting Utah's Utah Dixie Dix I I ie fe la land partaking of its hospitality and viewing one of its spots of grandeur Little Zion Canyon Thru the generosity of the Salt Lake Route and Mr Wylie of the famous Wylie Way Vay camps who has a beautiful camp in Zion canyon canyon canyon can can- yon and another on the rim of the the- Grand canyon just over the line in Arizona the Utah Press Association was furnished excursion rates to the canyon and reduced rates at the camp while there We left Delta on the 6 05 train Saturday morning and found aboard a goodly number umber of the country newspaper boys bos of th the state together er with our secretary Porte and wife wite Mr Early ticket agent for f the Salt Lake Route and wife wite and J. J H. H Jones manager of the Western Vestern Newspaper Union We Ve left the train at Lund and found the Wylie Way autos lined up at Hue the depot ready to carry us into Utah's tropical semi-tropical fruit gardens gardens gardens gar gar- dens and the canyon camp A trip of 35 miles overland brot us to the pretty modern metropolis of Cedar Valley where we were met and welcomed welcomed wel wel- corned by its towns town's people foremost foremost foremost fore fore- most of whom was editor Wilkinson who made our stay very pleasant and accompanied us to the canyon canon After leaving Cedar City in our ture big autos we cros d' d the des des- desert desert ert and down thru the the blac black t canyon canyon canyon can can- yon to emerge at the beautiful farm home of one of the oldest settlers Inthe in inthe inthe the neighborhood Mr Anderson who had whittled a a. beautiful home and ana farm from t thi thousands of rock strewn over the the- liter ground ground 1 ly piling up the stones one on another another another an an- other and building his farm Carm inch by hi Inch h. h We Ve found found Mr Anderson and his charming daughter exceedingly glad to see us and the their r hospitality of the kind that makes you feel that you are more than welcome Here Her we ate cantaloupes and other delicious fruits From the Anderson farm we passed passed passed pass pass- ed thru some beautiful orchards and vineyards and slid down into the them themo m mo mouth uth of Zion Canyon shortly before before before be be- fore the sun went down Our ride up the canyon while it was yet sunup sunup sunup sun sun- up and light was filled with sights of grandeur and magn lights and colors Great walls towered up thousands of feet all about us their top either tapering into pinnacles high in the air or ending abruptly like gigantic walls of masonry The colors of these great masses run from white at the top to a abla bla blackish kish red near the bottom with all the varying shades as the eye follows up or down Here and there could be seen a blue mist apparently rising from the lower depths and fading as it rose giving a beautiful softening effect to the ruddy tints of the rocks We Ve arrived at the them camp at eight o'clock that evening and nd were greeted greet greet- ed most cordially by Mr Wylie and his assistants and after one of the most appetizing meals we ever sat down to and a short pow wow as asto asto asto to ourselves and our trip on the morrow morrow morrow mor mor- row we hied ourselves off t to bed bedin in n as clean and comfortable a house tent and bed as could be found in inthe inthe inthe the best appointed in a city Next morning we started on our hike nike up the canyon in wagons wagons v gons on horse back and afoot This trip consisted of a continuation of the rand scenery we had passed thru the evening before and mile after mile was traversed with the same variety of colors confronting us on every side yet et spread on in many different ways and a continual change of forms presenting themselves them them- elves selves to the eye We Ve came to the foot toot cable which swung from a towering cliff down to the bottom of the canyon ca Over this cable lumber is lowered from the table-land table above where itts it itIs itis Is ts sawed sa wed and transported many miles by the settlers for building es From the tho dizzy height where this cable is anchored a party of tourists were let down to the bottom one ono by one men and women One standing at the bottom and following following follow tollow- ing this slender thread up thru the thousands of feet can imagine to some degree the thrill one would experience experIence experience ex ex- in being swung o out t on it and cut loose from all things material mater mater- ial except a small box to which they were strapped hanging beneath to what appeared to be a mere spider spiderweb spiderweb spiderweb web strand and of feet before they could again set foot on mother earth A hundred yards farther on is what is called the Raining Rock where water breaks from the cliff clift and comes down clown continually in a regular shower On up the canyon as far as our Amounts mounts could clamber over rocks and trees and thru the stream we met with the same gorgeous coloring and ever changing formations Space forbids a full detailed description description description des des- of our trip to Zion Conyon and md back Suffice to say however that had not this Canyon been filled with great promise Mr Wylie whose excellent board hospitality and md fine sen sense e of manner of pleasIng pleasIng pleas- pleas Ing the tourist Is known to all visitors visitors vis vis- vis of Yellowstone would not be there here While the Wylie Way Vay amp jamp is new in Zion canyon everything every every- thing possible Is being clone done for the comfort and ease of the tourist Mr Wylie already has ha had a water system installed and is preparing to seed lawn down the grounds within the camp His beds and meals take us right back to mothers On our way down we were met at athe atthe he the train at Milford by editor We Web Web- iter ter and a delegation of Milford's business men who informed us that ve eve were their guests while at Mil- Mil ord tord After escorting us its to a fine breakfast at Milford's big hotel the Milford lIlford we were shown over the town during our short stay stay- On our ur return we were entertained at a banquet by the business men of Cedar Ced Ced- ar City Both these towns sh showed wed unmistakable signs of life Ufe enter- enter arise irise and advancement These were the reflections from the men of the town whose enterprise enterprise enterprise en en- was plainly plainly reflected in the orward movement of their town as veil vell as the well-patronized well columns of f their local papers While we could continue to tell our readers of the various interesting interesting interesting interest interest- ing things met with on our
