I. -(Delayed) Marine-First Lieutenant Richard N. Peterson, 22, of Delta, Utah, pilot of a Mitchell medium bomber based here, shared credit with his co-pilot' in finding the largest concentration con-centration of Jap torpedo boats encountered on Mindanao since it was invaded March 10. Peterson, wfiose wife, Maxine, lives in Salt Lake City, and his copilot co-pilot discovered the carefully camouflaged cam-ouflaged enemy boats while returning re-turning from a strike against other Jap naval installations. "We were out of rockets and almost al-most out of ammunition, but we strafed them anyway," he said. "We know we seriously damaged at least one." Other bombers from the First Marine Air Wing squadron returned return-ed to the cove later and accounted for six more of the deadly little suicide vessels. Naval gunfire sank three more. The Japs had been launching frequent night attacks on American, Ameri-can, shipping and shore installations installat-ions with the torpedo boats. Peterson is the son of M-S Noble Peterson, Delta. |
