Show 1 J i If r. r f i 1 i. i j NEWS OF OUR M EN IN UNIFORM w aadu t Le Let letter Box Fox M Somewhere in Sn Sicily I It Sept 7 1943 Dear M Mother other t eD we finally struck it rich I fir her er words words' we are living Jiving the lf rO We have three hours i 2 8 g on duty and the rest of the e t V thO out ourselves elves There are three vf nf t US here ere and we have an Eyetie kid Wd who Vho comes over and cooks and Cleans Jeans up for tor- us He runs errands and nd rd goes to town for stuff We give him m a few cigarettes and feed him We vve are going to have fried chicken today h that ay-that that Is If the fellow brings j frying pan as he promised he would We have plenty of eggs and tomatoes We are arc living fine on our rations Each box Is for five people so j every five days they dump us Off a barrel of water and three boxes of rations The worst trouble we have is in finding something to cook in We made a frying pan out of a large milk can but you youcan youcan can only fry three eggs at a time I 1 hope nope they leave us here We are right between two towns They built them on top of the mountains n around here in the old days figurIng figurIng figuring figur figur- ing it was easier to keep the enemy enemy en- en emy cray down the hill hm than to be down and keep them up In the one town they are still Using a church that is over years old There Is another Mother one v that is older than that but all that thatIs Is l left ft Is the steeple We dont don't get getto getto getto to go to either town It is too far farup farup farup up the mountain and one of the towns is off limits Something cen cen- Well that is about all for now bu will but write again soon There is no flO for not having the time while we are here Write soon Love S Nelson SJ J a To ro Mrs Walora Wallace September 10 1943 Dear Mr and arid Mrs 1 i Its It's been a long time since I was home but Ive I've thought so many S L Umes s of the good old days In the High School School- at Delta In fact I have my year book with me now I must have looked through it a dozen times They are such happy memories Now when things arent aren't so nice at times it helps so much to be able to realize how wonderful wonder wonder- ful they used to be Id I'd give anything anything anything any any- thing to be back there on our good old football field receiving a kick kickoff kickoff kickoff off or making an end run or maybe maybe maybe may may- be getting my nose pushed in the dirt Someday things will return to normal and Ill I'll certainly appreciate ate ate lots of things that I didn't even take the time to think about before I realize now although I never learned in school all that I should hould have that what I did learn is certainly coming in handy Not only what I learned from books but also just the ordinary everyday everyday everyday every every- day habits which I formed just tryIng trying trying try- try Ing to be a good student I also know that the training I received just competing in athletics is proving proving ing big to my advantage in hundreds of little ways everyday Ive I've been going to school almost constantly since I came into the army nine months ago and believe believe believe be be- lieve me they really throw things at you fast in these technical schools therefore my correspondences correspond correspond- have had to be few Last January when I left Salt Lake City I was sent to Keesler Field Miss where I received three weeks of basic training From there I was sent to Scott Field Ill lil and was given four months in Radio operation and mechanics Our class consisted of approximately approximate approximate- ly students I felt very much satisfied when upon graduation I Iwas Iwas Iwas was presented with an award of distinction along with four other fellows I am now flOW finishing six weeks of pretty difficult training in an aerial gunnery school It has taken a lot lotof of studying so far but Ive I've done okay okay I believe I have one more week left then Ill I'll graduate re receiving receiving receiving re- re m my silver slIver wings and a sergeantS sergeant'S sergeants sergeant's sergeants sergeant's ser ser- ser ser- geant's rating That is if my shootIng shooting shoot shoot- ing lag is good enough next week Its It's very easy to wash out here if a aguy aguy guy doesn't w want nt it and even if he does some sometimes tunes From here I will be sent to Salt Lake to be assigned to a bomber squadron as a radio gunner I know Im I'm going to enjoy it very much It will also be wonderful if I can get home again if only for fora forS S a few hours If and nd when I ever get a furlough fur- fur surely drop down and Ill I'll laugh lough IP pay nay you a jL 11 visit If you see any of v my old friends frieds ie please tell teU them r me t hello heno for and students friends S.
