E Melville Bishop First Woman Settler and Oldest Mother in Delta Mrs Ann Elizabeth Melville 1 Bishop the oldest mother in Delta has also the distinction of being the first woman woman woman wom wom- an settler in the town of Delta Mrs Bishop who will be five years I Df f age on May 20 1941 arrived here herein heren in n May 1907 the first woman to come liere to make her home Mrs Bishop was born in Fillmore in 1856 the daughter of Utah pioneers parents arents who had come to the country driving hiving a team of oxen settling first firstin in m n Provo Prove in 1852 and later in Fillmore in n 1853 She can well remember her early sarly days in Fillmore and rind although the he family and community prospered a e bright memory from her childhood chil was vas the gift of oC an apple Mrs Bishop says lays that George Q Cannon sent her mother nother a box of apples for the family family fam fam- ily ly from Salt Lake City before the Fillmore trees were old enough to bear Dear and each ooch of the children had cad an apple for a treat trent Mrs Bishop Bishop Bishop Bish Bish- op took a bite from lOm her apple each day Lay and it lasted her a week I In May 1907 Mrs 1 Bishop came here hereto hereto I to o the box car station of Aiken to join oin her husband Nelson S. S Bishop who vho had preceded her a week They came ame here from American Fork being I among the first settlers to this new project and the first family to locate i here Mr Bishops Bishop's first task was w s to I I drill kill a well and then build a shanty I Ifor while he commenced I i for or his family work on his big house Their daughter daugh daugh- I daugh-I I ter or was with them and their small mall grandson William S. S Bassett I I By Thanksgiving in 1907 Mr and Mrs Irs Bishop moved into their large home near the railroad track which is s now owned by Oliver Davis At that hat time their home was also a home for or travelers and newcomers to the tract and it was not unusual for thirty thirty thiry thir thir- ty y passengers to alight from the early morning train and Mrs Bishop put them hem up The project soon built up I farmers Cb came here to live and the town own was established first as Aiken then hen it was attempted to name it Melville but as there was already a aown town own of nearly that name the postoffice postoffice post post- office ruled against it and it v vas was given given en n the name of oC Burtner some yeras later ater the name of Delta was chosen Other ther had made their homes I I I here stores were opened and and new hotels hotels ho ho- hotels were built Before that to trade was present Mrs Bishop says they shopped at Oasis and often shipped in food and household household household house house- hold necessities It was necessary to order their fresh mea meats s from Nephi as there was no nc closer meat market so as the trains went through they the bundle of meat off and Mr Bishop hurried to tc pick It up before the coyotes got it Pioneering in Delta was a pleasure to Mrs Bishop and she recalls with enjoyment many incidents in their lives lives liv liv- I es here As the town grew her interests interests interests inter inter- ests and duties grew and she was I fully occupied with home and family and service in the community and the church She served as first president of the Relief Society in Delta and later lat lat- later later lat lat- er was made Stal Stake e Board member and also in the presidency A large I number of friends enjoyed her company company company com com- pany and hospitality Mrs Bishop is the mother of three daughters Mrs 1 Nora Ingersoll of American American American Am Am- Fork Mrs Eldula Bassett who died in Delta several years ago and Mrs Wallace Vallace of Delta Also she has sixteen grandchildren and twelve great The first Delta camp of the Daughters Daughters Daughters Daugh Daugh- of Utah Pioneers was named in her honor Ase the town grew larger a second s cond camp was established and named for Helen Marr McCullough al also also al- al so an early earty settler Mrs Bishops Bishop's interests in life are as 1 keen as ever and she enjoys enjoy visits with friends She spends considerable ble time knitting and crocheting andin andin and andin in her day has made more quilts than she can remember and also made up miles of carpet rags She has always been a gardener and her home is surrounded with flowers and trees Since Mr 1 Bishops Bishop's death in 1920 she has made her home with with her da daughters and for some time past has been with her daughter Mrs Wal Wal- lace She Is a n well loved and familiar figure to and has been a mother to more than her family in kindness and care We Ve are proud to honor Mrs Bishop and to pay her special tribute on Mothers Mother's Day |
