Show Stockmon Study flange Analysis The annual meetings of the 7 livestock associations on the Fillmore Fill-more Ranger District, Fishlake National Na-tional Forest, were held recently. Each Association is made up of all the grazing permittees on one forest for-est allotment, with the objectives of promoting the interests of the livestock raising industry and cooperating co-operating with the Forest Service in the management of the forest resource to realize maximum forage for-age benefits consistent with other uses. At the meetings this year, considerable con-siderable time was devoted to a discussion of range condition araaly sis based on soil stability, plant composition, plant density and indications in-dications of upward or downward trends of vegetation and soil. The data of this analysis will be used by- the stockmen in management aimed at increasing vegetation and stabilizing soils on areas where conditions are unsatisfactory, and in maintaining present satisfactory conditions. County Agent Rodney Ricken -bach offered valuable suggestions to these groups for increasing income in-come and keeping the industry secure by running only top quality livestock, providing ample forlage, early disposal of "boarder" livestock live-stock that are not paying their way and the keeping of records to aid in the determination of rates and costs of weight gains that determine profits. As most of the forest allotments embrace important water shed lands, grazers have the dual management man-agement objective and responsibility responsibil-ity of providing maximum usable water delivery, rates top consideration; consider-ation; grazing use, as with all other uses, must of necessity be allowed al-lowed only to the extent that it does not jeopardize the watershed resource. Stockmen, who are also water-users, water-users, are appreciative of this fact, and have on many occasions volunteered vol-unteered substantial cooperation toward fencing to effect grazing control, water development and trails to encourage better distribution distrib-ution of stock and, when these measures have failed to get the desired results, have made adjustments adjust-ments in grazing use to encourage revegetation and more effective watershed conditions. |
