A Leroy Taylor professor of electrical engineering Professor Taylor w wrestled with resistance coils coils' and incapacitated Arts and Science students in the strenuous years from 1903 to 1907 In those days states Professor sor Taylor when there were fewer fewer fewer few few- I er students in the entire university I than are now graduated every year the engineers and arts students were nearly equal in number Out I of the natural but intense rivalry between the two came many bloody battles battJes While I am on the subject subject subject sub sub- of battles I may say that the fights of those days were far different dif dif- dif J ferent from those between the freshmen and sophomores of to to- to day Many a loyal son of Erin meas measured his his ground Every football game furnished an excuse for a general fight The number of students then was so small that such a thing as two sections in a subject was 41 unheard of There were only four students in all of my engineering engineering engineering en en- classes and in 1907 only four students were graduated the school of electrical engineering engineer engineer- ing whereas sixteen or twenty c complete the course annually now Because of our smaller numbers I believe we were better organized and had more spirit There were just four buildings on the campus the Mechanics' Mechanics building and three in the circle There was not a blade of grass to tobe tobe tobe be seen A group of us erected a sign Keep Off the Grass A A. short time later the administration tion planted some grass Another I thing I well wen remember was the time we scraped several inches of wet clay off the football field fieldin in preparation preparation preparation prep prep- for the game in which Utah first defeated Colorado Upon his graduation the professor professor professor pro pro- fessor went to Schenectady N. N Y Yf for two years in the employ of the General Electric company He returned returned re re- re turned to teach electrical engineering engineer engineer- ing ing- at Utah for a year and then went into the auto and contracting business for three years He has I been at Utah since except for two leaves of absence to Stanford university university university uni uni- and one to the University of Michigan where he took a Masters Master's Masters Master's Masters Master's Mas Mas- ter's degree Mr Taylor is now a member of the presidents president's faculty advisory board for student publications publications publications in addition to being a member of a legion of engineering engineer engineer- ing societies |
