Show Shackled WHAT is the power which shackles the free voice J JUST of the faculty The Chronicle believing believing- that the student body is entitled to know the details advantages advantage's and disadvantages of the proposed proposed proposed pro pro- posed administration split has endeavored to present alla all a available information concerning concerning- the new plan and to date has printed panted the following The report of the committee making the administration investigation and the the- opinion of the committee com corn chairman A special reporter has been assigned to procure statements from faculty members regarding the advisability of inaugurating inaugurating inaugurating ting a College of the University of Ut Utah h as stipulated by bythe bythe bythe the investigating committee But the Chronicle representative tive inevitably returns with nothing g to print with no additional faculty opinions to be laid before the students of the University Why Because the members interviewed have prohibited the Chronicle from publishing any statement which would quote them as either pro or con toward the subject Many of them according ng to the representative have presented goo good arguments favoring the administrative division and others have b been firm that it should not be permitted basing their claims on CD seemingly good foundations But the Chronicle is estopped from going farther for itis itis it itis is the custom of the University and the policy of the Chronicle that no student nor faculty member shall be quoted against I I I his wit will The objection has been raised that many any of the faculty members do not sufficiently understand the new plan and hence cannot make any definite opinions T To- To Tous us this seems incredible incredible incredible ible for the Chronicle in two successive issues printed the committees committee's report a daily paper has discussed the proposal and mimeographed copies have been sent to the entire faculty Anyone connected with the University of Utah is entitled to full knowledge of such a R vital subject as this proposal to place all underclassmen under separate administration The Chronicle in m as asking king the opinions of learned educators of the University is asking a favor of them which in turn is a courtesy to the student body whose members would surely appreciate the file mature judgment o of such educators educator on the problem at hand Obviously the proposition will be the subject of heated debate when the faculty board meets for its consideration But it appears to the Chronicle even though the decision rests in in the hands of the faculty and the Board of Regents that student opinion stimulated b by bJ y faculty r opinion would not be objectionable before the matter comes to a vote We Vole wonder again What is th the file power which shackles shackles' the free voice of the faculty |
