Show Itent Overcharge Cases Settled; No Court Action i Mr. Glen D. Reese, Salt Lake City j Area Rent Director for the Office of Housing Expeditor, today an-! an-! nounced that his office had ob- tained restitution of $2,920.50 in rent overcharges to 60 tenants, since the beginning of the year. Sixty landlords were involved in the overcharge cases, which were settled without court action. "In each case," Mr. Reese said, "the restitution proceedings began j with an inquiry to this office by i the tenant as to the amount of his I maximum legal rent. For housing i j subject to rent control regulations, t Mr Reese continued, "no landlord i may charge more than that maxi-: maxi-: I mum legal rent which is on file j here." (The Salt Lake City Rent ! Control Office is located at 222 South West Temple in Salt Lake City. According to Mr. Reese many tenants are reluctant to bring complaints com-plaints to the Area Rent Office because be-cause they fear eviction if they do. "This is understandable in view of the tight housing situation existing in this" area," Mr. Reese said, "but I want to make it plain that we are empowered under the law to seek court injunctions to prevent such evictions, and are prepared to do so when necessary." |
