Show Visit CimsiSsoii Masaisiesai Sunday Mr. and M-s. Richard Van Horn and two children and Frank Beckwith, Sr. went to the Gunnison massacre site. These visitors are Coloradian, in which state there is the town of Gunnison, Gunn-ison, and the Gunnison River, nam ed after Capt. John W. Gunnison. The tragic event was rectied to them, and then the party separated separ-ated in search of Indian artifacts. arti-facts. Notwithstanding the fact that Bov Scouts and others have searched the area many times, we were fortunate enough to find a large double handful of pottery fragments, one of which was painted, pain-ted, called "black on gray;" two pieces which had been decorated by daubs of clay welded onto the surface, very interesting. Mrs. Van Horn found a small, but exquisitely ex-quisitely shaped arrow head, not broken, the tings perfect, and the workmanship such that the find will he an ornament mounted in gold and worn by her as a treasured trea-sured memento of the trip. Then we went to Old Fort Deser-et Deser-et and had lunch and talked of the building of that relic of an interesting inter-esting past. Then over to the petroglyphs on the lava flow, which we thoroughly explored. Then to the "Guardian of the Deseret" (the Great Stone Face) and home. We felt that it was a day well spent. |
