Show I STUDYING IN I GERMANY II F II The Students I I By Stan Sharp We Ve left left off last time with a stein being emptied Since then we imagine the average German student has emptied quite a few of them hem as Saturday is duelling day Saturday night there pre are fraternity fraternity i ity ty meetings and Sunday morning morning morn- morn ing ng the students usually can be found in some with the ale in front of him Since writing the last article t o one e or two I am delig delighted ted as aswell aswell aswell well as surprised that so many read it have asked me to tell more about what the students in Germany look lik like and what they do May I 1 st state te that when we speak of the stud students in Germany German we think involuntarily of male students student They are in the the great majority and only only about about ten per percent percent percent cent of the student body is made up of girl students v This is my impression then of the male student He is a clean cut neat appearing young fellow his fr fraternity cap always im immaculate immaculate im im- immaculate maculate and spotless his hair well trimmed and sh short rt his suit pressed and shoes shined across across across- one shoulder and over his tie down to his waist i is his fraternity fraternity fraternity fra fra- ribbon the same color as I his cap and then come those two I t the e. e cane and the gloves Few students ever go out I without canes And the gloves I Oh they are to b. b be seen not worn They are carried in in the hand hand that does not carry the cane Then in school proper prope there is that ever pr present sent brie briefcase as In all of the lime Ume ime we were in Germany and andI i iI I mean we we di did not see a single single single sin sin- gle student carrying books under his arm Upon meeting a friend be he male or otherwise the German student d doffs his cap lowering it clear to his waist transfers it to the he left hand and shakes hands I The Th modern student is still quite I formal He is quite easily of offend offend- en d.- d. ed An insult means a challenge and a duel For ex example mple if L Luisa isn is Karls Karl's weakness and Fritz says to George that tha he thinks she is is' is isa a aback aback back number or words to that effect and Karl hears about it then thEm it might result in a hitting of Georges George's face with Karls Karl's gloves and exchange e of cards and anda andI a du dueL Well We'll tell you about duelling duel duet duelling I ling next time |
