legislate laflie e and county candidates candi dotes be held hold not later than september dr dark clark of juab opposed the tile report and urged that one convention only be held and that convention com en be gai given en the thought right to decide what it would do and moved as an amendment that but one state con tion be held for all purposes mr kearns of summit seconded mr darks clarks motion and in an par nest speech urged that the plan of two conventions reported by the committee was unusual and would debri deprive e republicans of the right to say whom they wanted to support for president he said that all the committee should do was as to call a republican convention he urged this he said in the interest of harmony mr air campbell moved as an amendment to mr air clarks motion that but one convention be held and that the call for the convention be made to state that it was for the purpose of nominating three electors who would vote for william mckinley mr a mend ment mr mel meighan i ghan of weber opposed the motion of dr dark clark and said it was the duty of this committee to take such action as would place the republican party of utah in line with the national republican party he claimed that any other action would tend to disrupt tho the party he argued at length that the committee report be adopted mr rapp of cache said tint with but few exceptions the republicans of cache county desired to have mckinley electors nomi bated and claimed that such vos vias the proper course for the committee to take mr graham proxy for mr air col lett of uintah said that he lie would vote to support the committees re port the republicans who wan ted to vote for mckinley should be given the tile right to do so they were assembled to find a way not to help the democratic party but to help the republican party and ite its candidates this was but right and any other course would be an abandonment of the rights of the party mr walton said he had hail come down from rich county to help take such action as would not only help to produce harmony in the party but would also help the party to win he supported the report of the committee and in answer to a q question fuestion from mr kearns said that his only purpose was wa s to old aid in securing liar harmon nion ho lie said mid tho party hod bad a right to live livet and he lie hoped action would be plan would de a largo large number of republic cans of the right to t 0 do as they wanted to then followed 11 discussion among the u member as to whether some of them then would endeavor to force bran electors upon iho the re ite publican ticket the i hair finally declared the discussion out of or der and informed speak ing that they ey must tho the chair mr thomas for hon thomas seavy of garfield eaid said he supported up ported tho report of the 1 committee because he believed the report of the committee NN vas as made in the interest of parly party harmony he said the discussion had taken a wide range and the tone of thedis the dis cushion was conclusive that a serious difference existed in the party which they could not pass by ho he eaid said that it seemed to him the only way to secure harmony was to prevent the differences on the dennial question beco ning a cause of contention in a party part convention thie this be he believed could be best beat se cured by having two co contentions ni mentions ent ions one for the nomination of mckinley mckinlay electora and one for the n nonn 0 ull nation oi of a representative in congress Con gresi in which MI 11 republicans could join he respected fhe feelings of those thore who deemed it to be their duty to support mr bryan but claimed they would ban hae e an opportunity of voting for bryan electors afforded them while republicans Republic aps who wanted to vote for mckinley look to choir convention for electors mr air mccallum supported the committee committees report report the lio tion ri of rf one convention coni antion on the motion of mr air dark clark and it was voted i town iown the committee report was then adopted mt pleasant was selected as the place to hold the first convention to nominate electors and alli ogden for the second convention to nominate a representative the committee then adjourned subject to the call of the chairman |
