Show iH LESSONS ON THE STRIKE H The Four Big Brotherhoods ought to H learn some lessons from the failure of the M great national railroad strike m The strike would have hurt them more m than the public, although there would M have been great suffering in spots. H Cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chi 1 cago, New Orleans, San Francisco and H many other large centers would have been H fed by water. 1 Our thousands of idle ships would have H come into use and are being used more m and more by labor and politics interferes interfer-es ing with railroads. H The 100,000 motor trucks and the five H I million motorcars would have handled the B population and fed the people without the j brotherhoods. m We might have got pay-as-you-enter M cars with only a porter to help people get 1 off at the right place, and open and shut H the doors. m On top of this a lot of station agents M and telegraphers would have been dispens 1 ed with by introducing ticket books for M 100 or 200 miles, perforated like postage m stamps, a stamp for a mile H There is no group or union so import- H ant but that the people could do without H them and possibly make more progress H than withvthem. M Unions and strikes and big strike meth H ods advocated by Gompers place a prem- H ium on progress and labor saving inven- H tions. |
