Show SUMMER COAL SCHEDULE Senator Frelinghuysen of New Jersey has introduced a bill proposing differential differen-tial freight rates, according, to the season on coal shipments. It-is said that producers, produc-ers, consumers and the railroads are all eager to see a lower summer schedule of rates that will make lower seling prices possible and encourage purchases during the slack months. The present condition is one very much like that prevailing years ago when the Socialist declared that freight rates were so high that "in Nebraska thepeople were burning their corn to "keep from freezing to death, and in Wyoming the people Were eating their coal to keep from starving starv-ing to death." It would seem to be high time that steps were being taken to provide pro-vide cheaper coal. It is foolishness to ex-, pect to get back to normal with coal selling, sel-ling, locally at $10.00 per ton. It is foolish fool-ish to cry that wages are too high as long as the wage earner earner is set back $10.00 every ton of coal he buys. Running Run-ning along with the regulation of wages should run the regulation of what the wage earner has to buy, and-coal is one of his necessities. It is further said that the danger of winter congestion in fuel movement will be largely obviated "by the passage of Senator Frelinghuysen's bill. Mebbe. But, first let us niake the stand for cheaper coal. That is one of the main items. |
