RICHMONP AD-HERENTS AD-HERENTS MUSTER FRIENDS AND RESIST ANY SUCH ACTION. SENATOR FUNK AND REPRESENTATIVE REPRE-SENTATIVE MILES LEAD OPPOSING FORCES. COMMISSIONER BERGESON IN THE "MIDDLE OF THE ROAD." u 1' Last Saturday afternoon the Board lO pi Education of the great county of W Cache had a real job on lt hands, but Judging from theVay the board aent th multitudes away ono is Justified Jus-tified In saying that'eren those who do not got what they want will nut feel badly. At least all will f ol that they were treated fairly, that all matters were carefully and "prayerfully" ns ono Bpcaker suggested, sug-gested, considered. It was the all Important hlgn school for the north Cache dhl'lcl that was up for consideration, and . icpresen tat Ives from all parts ot th district were present. It appears that the location of tho new high school was decided to be at Rlcttniiind by a former board of education ai'.l approved by'theipresent board, whtlo v now come'sa largVcommlttee of citizens citi-zens and taxpayers with raauesti Ui the form ot petitions asking that the matter of location be openud "P again. Hon. Edwin Mites of Smlthfleld led tho committee asking for a reconsideration re-consideration of the matter, while Senator Funk led another largo committee com-mittee asking that the deal bo considered con-sidered closed. Mr. Miles presented a map showing tho location of tl various towns In the district, togcth- I cr with their population. The map. I bo Senator Funk declared, showed I that "all roads lead to Smtthfield." I Mr. Miles was backed up by An- 1 drew King of North Logan, Mr. Wood and Parley Blngahm. of Amalga; V. I O. Reese of Benson, E. A. Paisons of Riverside, H. E. Hancey of Hyde ?k rork, B. Y. Benson of Trenton, and JCn Commissioner Bergeson of CornibU, im Perhaps It Bhould not be said thai ' Commissioner Bergeson backed Mr. ( I Miles, becauso ho did not. As a I matter of fact, after belittling Rich- I inond, hooking her up with "Rl)h- I mond, Covovlllo and Franklin, the I thrco Immovables," ho played the I mlddlo of tho road and declared that 1 as far ns Cornish was concerned "wi 1 can get to one place as well as tua other. Mr. John E. Griffin, a former nww- ber ot the board, from Newton, also I did not do Mr. Miles and his friends I any good. He held that the sahocl "schould he located where the next high school could be built at Ton- ton." This was decidedly against Smlthfleld and in "favor ot lUchmoad. f. Mr. Miles closed by leaving a list of questions for the board to study and answer, together with a load ol petitions from practically all the towns In the district. The other sldo was then admitted and Senator Funk took tho floor. Ho contended that tha location had bc-n fixed by tho former board, that the present board had approyfd It, a that tho matter In tho shapo ot bonds had bcon submitted to tho people and approved. Ho very skillfully ana'y-zed ana'y-zed tho Toto by which tho bonds wore voted, from which It appeared lhMJ iho people knew very well tho bull 1- tng was to be at Richmond. Bishop Ravslen of Clarkston felt that the Incident was closed and said thj people peo-ple ot Clarkston voted tho bonds with tho understanding that the school would be at Richmond. Mr. S. F. Wiser of Lewlston backed up Senator Funk and then Messrs. M. H. Stocks, Fred Taggert and J. M. Bright all ot whom signed the petition, peti-tion, withdrew from the petition, and presented some very interesting sidelights side-lights as to how tho names were obtained, ob-tained, all ot which made the t'mo pass more pleasantly and added humor hum-or to tho occasion. Mr. L. H. Alltn of Cove, M. E. Kent of Stephenson and H. H. Danlelson ot Wheeler ma t, substantial, statementg favoring tho action of the board, Mr. John P. Griffin ot Newton then juade pr-cil- cally the same talk that he made In the-othertneettng, and Charles Wa of Trenton, who was a member ot tho board at the time the site was located locat-ed at Richmond, delivered sumo sledge hammer blows for the tltcy-l mond contingent. Mayor C. L. Funk of Richmond and Bishop J. L Mc-1 Carrey made some timely hits favoring fav-oring the present site, and after all who cared to talk cither for or against had been given n chanca vo say all they had to say. tho boatd took tho matter under advisement and tho meeting adjourned. |
