Show Three Cheers After thinking about the end of the quarter quarter quarter ter and all alt things pertaining to such matters we are confronted with the reversal of the general opinion of the current epi episode ode of our college careers Jt t seems altogether fitting and proper that at this thi time of the quarter we should relate something pertaining to the subject in an attempt to quell the tired minds of the students and fearful admonitions of professors It has long been the general opinion of the college man that in order to succeed in his particular chosen career he must pay strict I attention to his school work he must adhere to all matters of scholarship and must make an esp especial cial effort io to to maintain per cent grades in all scholastic pursuits It is is the general consensus of opinion that time spent along social lines or for the moment in the thet thea a t far fam famed d bull sessions is not hot worth nearly as much as that spent in the library or under the time lamp burning midnight oil This popular opi opinion ion has been reversed somewhat in the minds of certain individuals who ho firmly believe in social gatherings bull sessions and the like Dr H. H T T. Plumb of the General Electric Company in a recent address to the students in the Engineering School unfolded fa facts ts which substantiate previous assumptions along this line It is his indication that students who forthe for the four years of course I are the poor scholars and who neglect their lessons for other more more pleasing social gatherings gatherings gather gather- 11 I ings always make outstanding successes because because because be be- cause they passed per cent in sociability J I It is his idea that students should mingle that mingle that men should have girls and that won women en should have beaux It was also pointed out during the course of the lecture that friendships formed during college days clays were the most valuable part of school life and carried much more weight than plain simple or hard study study- ing This seems to be somewhat of a different different different differ differ- ent viewpoint from the substance of a similar similar similar simi simi- lar lecture delivered a short time ago before an an assemblage when the students were urged to leave all social ocial activity by the roadside and to pay strict attention to th their ir scholastic work Things Timings are not the same as s they were many years ago the opinions and conditions of college life and college have changed materially ma ma- The misshapen vision of the college collegeman man has been been interpreted in more than one instance and it is gratifying to hear a word of praise from one who has been acquainted ac acquainted acquainted ac- ac with such problems and who has hasI continued to grow with the present day college college college col col- I lege man |
