Show GOVERNOR'S DAY ) It Is fortunate that Governor's Day at tho U. A. C. should como at a tlmo when tho legislature Is in session, nnd when so many farmers aro at the College Tho farmers represent tho silent forces that aro tho real strength of tho state. Thoy represent tho sober thought of men and women who listen to the inner volco of consclenco and of duty. Thoy nro the steadfast souls "who do tho dally work of tho world, not with a parado of virtue or an air of martyrdom, but with u cheorful courage and patience pat-ience and faith because thoy know no other call tjian tho call of duty. This will bo a fortunate opportunity for tho farmers 'to oxpross to their governor, and tho legislature, their npproval or disapproval of cetaln Important riieasures now before tho legislature, and lu courao of preparation. On the prohibition bill tho Governor has clashed with tho house In the matter of a prohibition commissioner. The Governor Is against this feature on tho grounds of economy nnd from tho fact that he believes in tho honor nnd Integrity of our 'citizens who havo sworn to onforco tho law. IIo believes in giving tho officials a chance. Farmers should manifest to tho Governor their nttltudo In this important fuattor. A strenuous effort Is being mado to pass a drastic nnd an expensive public utility bill BECAUSE IT WAS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. It will furnish a number of good fat Jobs, nnd cavry with It nn enormous exponse. Utah is not a Now York nor a Pennsylvania. Utah Is just a Httlo Utah, and farmers should drop a hint to tho members of tho legislature legis-lature and tho Governor telling them just how thoy think thoy should go in sponuing mo peoples money. An effort Is to bo mado to unlto all tho schools of tho stnto under one board of control, with a finance committee of threo who will as a matter of courso draw a salary. Thla will not work for economy, but on tho other hand will creato more paid offices. It will not work for efficiency. It Is not reasonable to supposo that Institutions of such diversified Interests can bo ns successfully handled by ono board, as by alnglo boards whoro a slnglo object and deslro Is nt stako. Wo oro Informed that officials and friends nnd patrons of tho University aro igalnst this movo, and wo commend thorn in their opposition. THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE IS THE FARMERS SCHOOL. Its history, llko that of other schools of Its kind, Is tho history of n pioneer movement move-ment In education, thnt has already grown to an Importanco undreamed of by Its founders, and yet "has but opened tho door Into that groat realm of now possibilities and achievements upon whoso exploration tho world Is watching with Intense interest." Its usefulness should not be Impaired. It is now coming to tho zonlth of Its power. It should not bo handicapped In nny such way as that proposed. It should bo handled and controlled by a board of trustees with an oyo slnglo to tho growth nnd development of tho FARMERS SCHOOL. Farmers should protest this proposed action on tho part of tho legislature of tho Stato of Utah. |
