While aomo little effort was mado In several of tho precincts to accomplish that ro-sult, ro-sult, Clarkston was tho only ono whero tho matter was taken up properly pro-perly and duo consideration and time given to it. Mr. Garrett Dahlo was tho representative) repre-sentative) nppolntod for that precinct, nnd ho called a meeting of tho taxpayers tax-payers of that placo, which was well attended, and at that meeting a com-mltteo com-mltteo of night was appointed o grado tho lands, two of them wero appointed from tho north part of tho precinct, two from the south, two from tho east, and two from tho west all bolng farmers well acquainted ac-quainted with tho lands and land values. val-ues. They supplied themsolvcs with plats of (ho land and went over tho entire precinct, section by section, and placed upon each tract a valuai tlon proportionate with all tho other tracts In that precinct; nnd to do this work correctly npd to avoid dispro portionate valuations, It required ttf-i teen meetings of this committee Of courso thoy did not grado the lands of taxpayers who did not Join tho leaguo, as thoy had no authority to do that, but all those whoso lands had beon graded are well satisfied with tho grading . thus performed. After the grading had boon mado, tho work was tondorod to tho county assessor, and it met with his hearty approval, and It can be truthfully said that Clarkston Is tho only precinct pre-cinct In Cacho county whero the assessment as-sessment has been Intelligently equalized, equal-ized, In fact tho only placo whero -x Just assessment has been made, or can bo mado until tho peoplo of tho other precincts of tho county tako tho matter up ns tho people of Clarkston Clarks-ton havo wisely dono. Much credit is duo Mr. Garrott Dahlo or his untiring oftorts, and also to tho members of tho commit-too commit-too who worked with him, and tho taxpayers of tho couuty should follow fol-low their oxamplo and once for all do away with tho dissatisfaction and fault-finding which Is heard ovory year about tho inequality In assessments. assess-ments. It is true that tho county commissioners meet every yoar as a board of equalization, but they do not cquallzo tho taxes nor novor have done, and It Is a wasto of tho county funds for them to spend their tlmo so unprofltably, Thoy do not and cannot equalize tho taxes, Thero Isj but ono way to do It right, and Clarkston hns dono It that way. The Taxpayers' leaguo is well pleased with what thoy havo accomplished In Clarkston. MEMBER TAXPAYERS LEAGUE. |
