Show NEGRO BURNED AT THE STAKE Dyersburg, Tenn., Dec. 3. Llgon Scott, a negro, who confessed to attacking at-tacking a white woman In this county, coun-ty, November 22, was burned at tho stake on the public square hero qes-terday qes-terday afternoon. The negro was being transferred from Jackson to Dyersburg in an automobile au-tomobile by three sheriffs, when the machine was intercepted by n mob, who took Scott from tho officers and proceeded to Dyersburg. The entlro county soon heard of tho negro's capture and thousands gathered in the town. A trial was arranged for and a Jury selected. Tho negro confessed his guilt and was at once rushed to a vacant lot near tho city square. An iron stake was driven into tho ground. The negro was tied to this after he was stripped of his clothing. cloth-ing. Red hot irons were applied to all parts of his body and finally a bonflro was built about him. Tho negro was burned to a crisp. The crowd was orderly and dispersed quietly and the usual Sunday quiet reigned In the city. |
