Show THE MEANING OF MEEKNESS A business man says in tho December Decem-ber number ot the American Magazine: Maga-zine: "I was brought up In a pious family fam-ily had to go to church as -a boy. I can remember sitting thero Sunday after Sunday by my father's side and hearing the preacher read out of tho Good Book. At home I had the same experience heard the Bible read aloud thousands 'of times, literally thousands of times, becauso wo had It every day. Somo of It made a curious Impression on me. Take this one, 'To him that hath shall bo given, and to him that hath not shall bo taken away even that which he hath. Why I used to sit thero when ten years old nnd say to mself when they'd read that -Well, that ono Is a lie nothing but a. lie. Who ever heard anything so foolish!' But, oh how I havo had to eat my words on it. Of course I know now that It Is tho last word on tho subject the truth stated so nakedly that It Is almost al-most cruel. It Is one ot those laws ot llfo so deep that it takes a man half a llfo time even to graps it. Thero was another one that used to amuso me 'Tho meek shall Inherit 'the earth.' When they'd read that I almost laughod In my sleeve at the nonsense ot it. Who ever heard any thing so ridiculous as the Idea that tho meek would over get anywhere! Say, do you know that I was a full grown man earning $5,000 a year before I tumbled to tho fact that thero was something ' In It! Of course, I know now that thero Is evorthlng in It! You bet tho meek Inherit tho earth Ifjhey hao ability. abil-ity. And meekness Is In Itself a great ability. "Meekness Is holding jour temper, sticking to a course, refusing to bo swayed from tho main lino of action. Oh, I understand the meaning of that world old wisdom now. I havo seen It work out. I havo seen some of the meek win out nnd I havo seen somo of tho blusterers lose out. "No, you don't have to sell mo tho Blblo as a. book of practical wisdom I am an unbeliever, havo no religious faith, but I know that I unconscious, ly uso tho Dlblo In my business all tho time. I don't think I hnlf roal-Izo roal-Izo how much I owo to that experience experi-ence of getting it drummed into mo as a boy rebelling against It and then finding out as tho years passed that I wasn't so smnrt as I had thought I was." |
