Schools Followed The tradition surrounding the lJ giant U on the hills just northeast northeast northeast north north- east of the campus dates back a k to the primitive days of th the University University sity The huge The huge emblem was considered considered considered consid consid- ered to be the the- first of its its' kind in existence at the time of erection It was was that a small eel col college o- o lege in California had bad conceived the idea ri a a short time before and had erected a a similar letter only a few short months before the construction con con- con construction of the U was started It is js now a a. a common thing to see every college and high s school l boa boat oat t of of its letter on n s some some nIe nearby hill or mountain side but it was truly trul trula a boast in those days when SUC such earmarks were few and far b be- be tween About bout years ago when wJ eh th the constitution was was yet in its its' in infant iti- iti f fant nt stage and class class' rivalry was wast wasat was wasat at t its highest there seemed ee ed to be c something uncanny about about- displaying displaying display display- ying y- y ing the class lass numerals n in various places During one of these frays Someone struck upon pon the Idea of ot placing tile the numerals on the hillside hillside hill hillside side near the site of the present emblem A lime kiln kiln which was in the near vicinity attracted Ul the attention n of the interested ones ones oness and one morning the campus awoke to find that the numerals ot of the thc class of 07 blazed forth o on the hillside in white white- lime The idea had Imd hadnot hadnot not been patented how ever and for several weeks there was a n series series ser ser- ser ser- series ies of of- fights ts to determine determine whose hose numerals should remain ain The TIle m men n j I students of oi the the institution sometimes remain there ere all night ig tl in an effort to keep the enemies off oft their th ir sacred As a re result re- re suIt sult of all this this- studies were be being seriously neglected In order to curb this d difficulty the student body officers decided that all a of the class class' numerals should be removed and that thata a n large U should replace th thorn them In the fall faU of 1905 a large blo block k U was placed on nn the hill Bill below and to the Continued on page 2 t- t U Ii 0 R Continued from Page 1 left of the present letter Lime was used for this emblem and consequently it was was not permanent The appearance of the emblem stirred 2 so much comment that stude stu student student stu- stu de dent t officers decided to make it permanent The small letter stood on th the hill all winter whiter and early the following spring plans lans were started started start start- ed towards the completion of a conCrete concrete con con- cr crete te structure The University authorities granted grant grant- ant ant- ed cd all aU of the men students a two- two day holiday d during ring which time money was raised from every available available avail avail- able source The cement was purchased purchased purchased pur pur- chased in great quantity and gravel gra gm- ye vel sand and water were carried to the foot of the hill The outline outline out out- line of the letter was staked out Lout from plans made by the Engineers the forms forms' were made and all was in readiness to pour the concrete There was no road to the site and time was taken to build a road suitable for hauling the material There was considerable question asto asto as asto to whether the concrete would stick after fter it had been placed on the ground but after fter considerable discussion discussion dis dis- dis the it decided decided de de- on subject was to go forward with the plans The first load of f gravel was to tobe be hauled up A team of four horses was used and as it beca became impossible for these to continue up the steep ascent two more were added It was of no no avail avan however however how bow ever and fora for a a time it was decided to abandon the plans The Utah spirit came back after a time and after several attempts a third of ofa ofa a a load of gravel was hauled b by a six horse team The cost of hiring horses then appeared ppe red to prohibit continuation The student body officers made madean an appeal to the commandant da t at Fort Douglas He became enthusiastic enthusiastic over the idea and contributed seven six mule teams Through the th increased strength in the carrying power the material was hauled and day by day the giant letter increased ed until it reached its present siz size Since that ha t time the annual spring whitewashing has been a tradition at the University It is interesting to note that the old established tradition is the outgrowth of a series of class and finally bec became me a n product of unifying school spirit I In corroboration with t this i tradition tradition tion there grew another which has I since died due to the passing of the tub Any male member of or orthe the faculty or student body who appeared on the campus on this day with a necktie on was severely t During the activities connected with the placing of the letter on the hill some of the students climbed up the inside of the heating heating heat heat- ing plant smoke stack and hung bung the class banner from the rim In order to accomplish this is they poured poured pour pour- ed d water on the fire and crawled up the inside of the stack through the smoke e. e while While they were makin making making mak mak- in ing their descent n some Borne some of the other men men were just just coming from the hill the form formers former's rs r's colors were re removed removed removed re- re moved the vanquished were tied and another hann banner r waved from the top of the pipe In the morning the fires were were again started and the emblem was safe for a day They then amused am themselves by shooting at it from the ground until until until un un- un- un til they were ordered to stop by President Kingsbury first idea of using the lime dump for the class numerals was conceived by Carl Scott now a lo local
