Show . L Colonel Roosevelt's Popularity It has been said by thousands' that the large Progressiva vote of two years ago was a personal Roosevelt vote, and on that basis thousands of good men and women1 have made it known that they were not for Democracy and Free Trade, and'that with Roosevelt Roose-velt out of the running they could be nothing but Republicans. This in a Word accounts for the change of sentiment in the past two years, and the great increase in the Republi- ' can vote wheresoever an election has been held, The July 1914 number of the North American Review, under Greetings to Our Colonel, by George Harvey of Democratic leanings, gives some interesting figures. After passing tho Colonel some compliments in general the article shows that tho Colonel's "political "polit-ical affinity" Is obviously pining away. It recites that only 48,253 of tlie 444,389 Ponnsylvanlaus who voted for Mr. Roosevelt in 1912 participated ic the recent Progressive primaries, while at the amo tlmo and p'.aco the Democrats lost ICO.oOO and tho Republicans actually gained 55,000, and polled t0,-000 t0,-000 more than both Democrats and Progressives combined. It shows a tremendous slaughter in re cent by-electlona for Congressman. For msUnce ir. Iowa, Republican gain 2,000, Democratic loss 7,000, Progressive loss 10,000. In New Jersay, Republican Re-publican gain 4,000, Democratic loss 4,000, Progressive Progres-sive loss 4,000. In Maine, Republican gain S,00o, Democratic toss 3,500, Progressive loss 6,800. In Massa6husetts, Republican loss 1,900, Democratic loss C.000, Progressive I083 5,500. In West- Virginia Republican loss 1,700, Democratic lo3s 9,000, Progressive Pro-gressive loss 9,500. In New York the Progressive enrollment dwindled to 110,000 as against 390,000 cast for Colonel Rocsovelt in 1912. In California the Republican enrollment excoeds that of olther Democrats or Progressives by more than 100,000. South Dakota which gave the Colonel 10,000 majority major-ity in 1912 recently elected a straight Ropubllcnn United States senator by 0,000. That the recent state election In Arkansas showed Utp.ubllcan loss S.000, Democratic loss 15,000, Progressive loss 13,-' 000, In Maryland, the Senatorial election showed a Republican increase ot 20,000 and a Progressive decrease of 50,000. In Schuyler county, Pennsylvania, Pennsyl-vania, the Republican enrollment increased 10,000 and tlie Progressive enrollment decreused 9,000, in Alleghany county, where President Tatt received but 24,000 votes, tlie Republican "en'ollmcnt this year is 127,000. Omaha, Nebraska showed Republican Republi-can gain 4,000, Democratic loss 4,000, Progressive loss 5,600. The Republicans swept St. Louis ut tho spring election and carried the leading Progressive district in Chicago; that few, if any, Progressives have been eljctod to the legislatures of the States which gave the Coionel his" strongest support. WHICH ALL GOES TO SHOW THAT THE 1912 VOTE WAS A R008EVELT VOTE, AND NOT EVIDENCED THAT THE MIGHTY ARMY WHO VOTED FOR HIM HAVE LOST THEIR FAITH IN THE TIME HONORED PRINCIPLES OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. THE FIGURES ARE THE BE8T EVIDENCE IN THE WORLD WHY THE PROGRESSIVES OF 1912 ARE NOT VOTING WITH THE DEMOCRATS, AND ARE NOT BEING FOOLED INTO VOTING WITH THE HYBRIDS,. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND ARE VOTING THE REPUBLICAN TICKET. IT IS THE BEST VINDICATION IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD OF TH08E 8TALWART PROGRESSIVES WHO HAVE THE NERVE AND BACKBONE TO COME OUT AND 8AY THEY WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH DEMOCRATIC TICKET8 OR COMBINATION TICKETS, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND DECLARE IT FROM .THE HOU8ETOP8 THAT "REPUBLICANISM AND PROTECTION IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME." |
