Show CONQRE83 ADD3 TO NATIONAL FOREST Nearly 17,000 acres have Just been added by act of congress to the Caribou Cari-bou national forest, Idaho. This Is one of the' first of such additions thru congressional action, and Is the largest larg-est so far made by direct legislation. Those who have followed tho national na-tional forest movement In this country coun-try will recall th'at most of Jho forests for-ests havo been created through presidential pres-idential proclamation, which sot aside for timber growing or for water protection, certain areas of tho public pub-lic doma'n. In March, 1907, however, congress passed a law that no further furth-er additions should be mado to tho national forest areas In the states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming, except through congressional action. Since July, 1909, residents of the city of Montpellor, Idaho, havo been petitioning to have this 17,000 acres added to the Caribou national forest because tho areoi Includes the water shed of the stream which furnishes tho city's water supply. Not being within a national forest the tract was given over to unregulated grazing graz-ing and other usages which resulted Vi strea,m pollution nnd becamo a serious menace to health. Tho citizens citi-zens of Montpellor, at several times subsequent to their first efforts In 1909, renewed their petition; and the act Just passed represents tho successful suc-cessful outcome of their efforts. |
