Are' Fiddling Away While Rome Is ' Burning, Says 8enator Weeks Washington, March lG.Thoy arc fiddling away while Rome is burning, said Senator Weeks, Republican, of Massachusetts today after a conference confer-ence with President Wilson, In which he declared the New Haven railroad conferees with the department of Jus-tlco Jus-tlco were wasting tlmo and that executive ex-ecutive influence was required to bring them 'together promptly. It was understood that the senator suggested to the president, that he call in Attorney General McReynolds Governor Walsh of Massachusetts, Chairman Howard Elliott of the Now Haven and T. W. Gregory, special counsel for the department of Jus-tlco Jus-tlco to bring about an agreement. The president had a conference arranged ar-ranged with the Attorney general later la-ter today and It was not supposed that he would determtno on his course until then. Senator Weeks pointed out what he believed to be a serious aspect of tho situation. A Serious Situation The New Haven, ho said, must raise about 1100,000,000 in the next four months to meet maturing obligations obli-gations and under present conditions it cannot. There is one man who can bring all the various elements together. to-gether. He is tho president of tho United States. Senator Weeks indicated bo had not discussed the merits of tho .demands .de-mands of tho New Haven and the department of Justice -but emphasized emphasiz-ed tho necessity for prompt action. Tho attorney general's vtew is that the property should be disposed of within the next two and a tialf or three years before the close of tho present administration, becauso he thinks the responsibility for the dissolution dis-solution of the New Haven should not be left to any future administration. |
