Show AMERICANS AT WORK IN FRANCE Washington, April 24. Although France Is- particularly well supplied with good roads, the ever Increasing war needs have demanded new roads as (most necessary for the proper backing up of our fighting forces. It is estimated 'that more than 1200 miles of military highway will be built In France .during the present year by American engineers. engi-neers. Most of the roads of France are built of-water bound macadam. Ono of the principal objections to water bound macadam near the front Is the dust which arises from it in dry weather under heavy war traffic. Clouds of dust draw artillery fire from the enemy and for this reason the United'States engineers in planning plan-ning road construction and maintenance mainte-nance near, the American front are using large quantities -of: tar 'coating, 'coat-ing, which' Is easily obtainable In Franco. . ' "' ' vl" The tremendous task of maintaining maintain-ing thego roada In perfect condition can well be imagined when It is realized re-alized that as far as, wear and tear are concerned, war tratfjo Is ten times as. great as the' traffic on Fifth Avenue, New York. Coupled with this is the peculiar nature of the , French-11, which Is of, limestone formation, and which makes constant con-stant attention to the roadbed im- poratlve. r The Important work of keeping the highways of communication open falls to tho lot of tho pioneer and general construction battalions, There Is no more vital part of this great struggle than the work of thoso two units. To carry ou this work, skilled mon from a large num-bor num-bor of trados are required. The tochnlcal porsonnel of thoso units Is maintained by means of a Replacement Regiment. Thero Is but ono such organization In tho United Statos, Tho First Replacement Regiment Regi-ment of Engtncors, located at Washington Wash-ington Barracks, D. C. To this regiment regi-ment has been delcgatod the task of keeping the various engineer units supplied with men whoso military and technical training Is consistent with the units to which they are to be assigned. The technical training Is accomplished by the courses given giv-en In the Regimental Trade SchoolB. Run nwaf with a handsomer man.
